Chapter 4 - Cracking the Foundation

Two days later, Claire met Marcus in his high-rise law office overlooking the snowy Rocky Mountains.

"The audio tape destroyed their defense," Marcus said with satisfaction. "Ryan's criminal attorney is trying to negotiate a plea deal, but the District Attorney refuses to negotiate. They want maximum sentences."

"Good," Claire said. "Now tell me about the money."

Marcus pulled out a detailed financial flowchart. "It's worse than we thought, but clearer than ever. Grant's shipping company was a complete sham. He was running a classic Ponzi scheme, taking money from local investors to pay off his personal gambling debts at tribal casinos."

"And Ryan was helping him?"

"Ryan was the architect," Marcus revealed, pointing to a series of offshore transactions. "Ryan used his access to your personal files while you were sleeping to steal your digital signatures. He funneled $3.2 million from your private portfolio into Grant’s company. But here’s the kicker: Ryan wasn't just doing it for his dad."

Claire leaned forward. "What do you mean?"

"Ryan was planning to abandon both you and his parents," Marcus said, laying down a passport copy. "We found a second passport under the name 'Ryan Bennett' with a Saint Kitts & Nevis citizenship application. He was transferring the stolen money into an offshore trust in the Caribbean. The moment your baby was born and he secured the final payout from your stock liquidation, he was going to flee the country."

Claire sat back, a cold numbness settling over her chest.

She had spent three years believing Ryan was simply a dutiful son, caught between his overbearing father and his wife. She had tolerated Grant’s rude comments at dinner, Diane’s constant financial demands, and Brooke’s arrogant entitlement—all because she thought Ryan loved her.

He hadn't loved her. He had viewed her as a gold mine to be stripped clean before escaping.

"Does Diane know?" Claire asked quietly.

"Diane and Brooke are currently staying in a cheap motel outside Denver," Marcus said. "They tried to use Grant's credit cards yesterday, but all accounts associated with the fraud investigation have been seized by federal marshals. Brooke was dropped from her university because her tuition check bounced."

Claire stared out the window at the icy city below. "Let them taste the poverty they so deeply feared. But we aren't done yet, Marcus. I want every cent returned, and I want the shell companies liquidated."
