Chapter 9 - Justice Served

The following month, the criminal trial concluded.

The courtroom was packed to capacity as Judge Alvarez prepared to hand down the criminal sentences for the assault on New Year's Eve.

"Grant Bennett," Judge Alvarez said, her voice echoing with stern authority. "You committed a horrific, cowardly act of violence against an innocent, pregnant woman inside her own home. You showed zero remorse, attempting to blame the victim for your own depravity."

Grant stood shaking in his orange jumpsuit.

"For felony aggravated assault on a pregnant person and domestic violence," Judge Alvarez sentenced, "you are hereby sentenced to 18 years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first ten years."

Grant collapsed back into his chair, stunned.

"Ryan Bennett," the judge continued, turning her sharp gaze to Claire’s ex-husband. "You restrained your pregnant wife while your father assaulted her. You abused her trust, stole her life savings, and planned to abandon her. Your actions represent the lowest form of domestic betrayal."

"Please, Your Honor!" Ryan pleaded, tears streaming down his face. "I was under my father's influence! I love my wife!"

"You do not love her. You preyed upon her," Judge Alvarez snapped. "For accomplice assault, criminal restraint, grand larceny, and corporate forgery, you are sentenced to 15 years in state prison."

As guards led Ryan and Grant away in chains, Ryan screamed out, "Claire! Claire, please visit me! Let me see my daughter!"

Claire sat calmly in the front row, holding Marcus's hand. She did not say a word. She simply watched the men who had tried to break her be marched away to pay for their crimes.

Outside the courthouse, Diane Bennett was left standing alone on the cold pavement. Her house in Florida had been seized; her husband and son were serving long prison terms; her daughter Brooke had severed all ties and moved across the country to work as a waitress. Diane was left penniless, living in a subsidized studio apartment on public assistance.
