Chapter 5 - The Preliminary Hearing

The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate executives, and curious onlookers.

Grant and Ryan Bennett entered in orange prison jumpsuits, handcuffed and shackled at the ankles. Grant looked drawn and aged, his arrogant swagger replaced by sunken eyes and twitching hands. Ryan looked panicked, his gaze darting around the room until it landed on Claire.

Claire sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant cream-colored wool dress that highlighted her glowing, six-month pregnant form. She held her head high, her posture commanding and serene.

When Ryan saw her, he mouthed, “Claire, please.”

Claire met his eyes with absolute coldness, not offering a single tremor of emotion.

The judge slammed her gavel down. "We are here for the bail review and preliminary hearing in the case of Colorado v. Grant Bennett and Ryan Bennett."

The prosecutor stood up. "Your Honor, the State presents physical evidence, certified medical reports, and unedited 4K security footage demonstrating extreme cruelty, physical violence, and premeditated cruelty against a pregnant victim."

The prosecutor played the high-definition audio and video on the courtroom monitors.

The sound of Claire’s scream and Ryan’s callous words echoed through the silent courtroom. Several jurors on the grand jury panel winced. A female journalist in the back gasped loudly.

Grant’s attorney attempted to intervene. "Your Honor, my client was under immense emotional stress—"

"Silence, Counsel," Judge Alvarez snapped, her face severe. "The evidence before this court is horrifying. The defense's motion for bail modification is DENIED. Both defendants will remain in custody pending trial."

As the guards stepped forward to lead the defendants away, Diane Bennett suddenly stood up from the gallery, tears streaming down her makeup-streaked face.

"Claire! Please!" Diane sobbed, rushing toward the wooden railing. "He’s your husband! He made a mistake! Think of the baby! The baby needs a father!"

Claire stood up slowly, looking down at her mother-in-law.

"My baby doesn't need a monster," Claire said, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom. "And neither do I."

Diane collapsed into Brooke’s arms, weeping uncontrollably as security escorted them out of the building.
