Chapter 7 - Storm in the Delivery Room

Two months later, Claire sat in her newly secured, redecorated penthouse. The memory of that night had been washed away; the stained rug was replaced with warm hardwood floors, and the room was filled with soft cream furniture and a beautiful baby nursery overlooking the Denver mountains.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her lower back.
Claire gasped, clutching her belly. She looked down—her water had broken. She was only thirty-four weeks pregnant.
"Sarah!" Claire called out. Her friend, who had been staying with her, rushed into the room.
"It's time," Claire breathed, taking a measured breath. "Call the doctor."
At Denver Women's Hospital, Claire was moved into an advanced labor suite. The stress of the upcoming trial had triggered premature labor.
Outside the hospital room, security was tight. But Ryan’s defense lawyer, desperate to force a settlement before the criminal trial began, had tipped off Ryan's mother.
While Claire was in the middle of intense contractions, Diane Bennett managed to slip past the ground-floor security desk by claiming to be a hospital donor. She marched right up to the maternity ward floor.
"Claire!" Diane pushed open the outer door of the maternity suite, looking disheveled and frantic. "Claire, you have to sign the liability waiver! If you don't drop the civil lawsuit, they're going to take my home in Florida!"
"Get her out of here!" Sarah yelled, standing between Diane and the bed.
Claire, sweating and panting through a heavy contraction, looked at Diane with pure disgust. "Get... out..."
"You ruined my family!" Diane screamed as two hospital security guards grabbed her arms. "You greedy, heartless woman!"
"Your family ruined itself," Claire said, her voice cold despite the intense physical pain. "Guards, press charges for trespassing and harassment."
Diane was forcefully dragged down the hallway, her shrieks fading into the distance.
An hour later, after a grueling but safe delivery, the room fell completely quiet.
The doctor gently placed a tiny, beautiful baby girl on Claire’s chest. The baby had a tuft of dark hair and dark blue eyes that blinked softly against the warm hospital lights.

Claire wept tears of pure joy, holding her daughter close to her heart.
"Welcome to the world, my love," Claire whispered, kissing the baby’s forehead. "Your name is Maya. Maya Bennett. And no one will ever hurt us again."
