Chapter 1 - The Sovereign of the Syndicate

The air beneath the vinyl booth was thick with the scent of ozone, spilled coffee, and raw terror. Grace’s body remained rigidly coiled over Ethan, her muscles locked in an instinctual defensive shield.
"Miss, I need you to let me see my son."
The voice didn't belong to a desperate father; it belonged to a man used to moving mountains with a single syllable. Grace slowly shifted her weight, easing her arms from around Ethan's trembling shoulders, but she didn't step away entirely. As she rose to her knees, her eyes met the man standing in the center of the ruined diner.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, and immaculately dressed in a dark charcoal three-piece suit that bore not a single wrinkle despite the violence that had just transpired. His hair was dark, flecked with silver at the temples, and his jawline looked as though it had been chiseled out of granite. But it was his eyes that arrested her—an piercing, unnatural ice-blue that scanned the room like a tactical sensor before settling on her face.
This was Dante Salvatichi. Even a college student working double shifts knew that name. He was the undisputed head of the Salvatichi syndicate, the shadow ruler of Chicago’s underbelly.
"Daddy!" Ethan scrambled out from under the table, throwing his small arms around his father’s tailored trousers.
Dante dropped to one knee, the fearsome aura of a mafia don vanishing as he buried his face in his son’s neck, his massive hands checking the boy for injuries with frantic precision. "Are you hurt, Ethan? Did they touch you?"
Ethan shook his head, his small hand pointing directly at Grace, who was still kneeling on the checkered floor, her apron stained with grease and dirt. "The sunshine lady covered me, Daddy. She wouldn't let the bad men see me."
Dante looked up, his ice-blue eyes locking onto Grace. For three long seconds, nobody in the diner breathed. The surviving attackers were already pinned to the ground by Dante's heavy security detail, their weapons stripped.
"You shielded my son," Dante said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register that vibrated through the floorboards. He stood up, extending a hand to help Grace up. His palm was warm, calloused, and unyielding. "You threw your life on the line for a Salvatichi. In my world, Miss Miller, that makes you untouchable. And it means you are now under my personal protection."
"I... I just wanted him to be safe," Grace stammered, dusting off her uniform. "Any decent person would have done it."
Dante looked around the room at the patrons still cowering under tables, their faces frozen in fear. A dark, cynical smile touched his lips. "As you can see, Miss Miller, decency is a rare currency in this city. Marco!"

A massive man with a scarred jaw stepped forward, bowing his head. "Yes, Don Dante?"
"Bring her things. Rosie’s Diner is closed for the foreseeable future. Miss Miller is coming with us."
