Chapter 20 - A LEGACY OF SUNSHINE

Three years later.

The summer sun was setting behind the forested hills surrounding the Moretti estate, painting the evening sky in brilliant hues of violet, magenta, and pure gold. The private lake sparkled like a field of crushed diamonds.

On the stone terrace, a long wooden dining table was set for a family celebration. Paper lanterns hung from the branches of the old oak trees, casting a warm, magical glow over the gathering.

At one end of the table, Marcus and Rosie were helping Ethan—now nine years old and tall for his age—build a model wooden boat. Nearby, Captain Miller, now retired from the police force, sat enjoying a glass of fine wine, chatting animatedly with staff from the academy.

Near the edge of the stone terrace, sitting in a wooden rocking chair, was Grace. In her arms, she held two-year-old Lily—a sweet little girl with bright green eyes and a mop of dark curls, looking like a miniature twin of her mother.

Dante walked out from the house carrying a tray of fresh fruits and iced tea. He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his dark hair touched with silver at the temples, giving him an air of distinguished, timeless majesty.

He set the tray on the table and walked over to Grace's chair.

He knelt beside her, wrapping one hand gently around Lily’s tiny fingers. The toddler giggled, grabbing her father's thumb with her small hand.

"She has your stubbornness, Grace," Dante smiled warmly, looking up into his wife's eyes.

"And she has your blue eyes when she's scheming," Grace teased gently, leaning down to press a kiss to Dante's lips.

Ethan came running over, holding his finished wooden boat. "Father! Look! Marcus helped me build the rudder! Can we sail it on the lake before dark?"

Dante stood up, placing a hand on Ethan's shoulder. "Of course, son. Let's take it down to the dock."

Together, the family walked down the stone path toward the quiet water of the lake. The summer air was warm, sweet with the scent of pine, wisteria, and blooming marigolds.

Ethan knelt at the edge of the wooden dock, carefully setting his small boat into the water and watching it float across the mirrored surface of the lake. Dante stood behind him, his arm wrapped securely around Grace's waist while she cradled sleeping little Lily against her chest.

The girl who had once been forty dollars short on rent was now surrounded by an abundance of love, safety, and joy that money could never buy.

And the don who had once lived in a dark fortress of fear and isolation had built a real, honest home—a sanctuary where his children could grow up without ever knowing the cold shadows of the past.

Dante pulled Grace close, pressing a tender kiss against her temple as the first stars began to appear in the darkening violet sky above the mountains.

"Look at them, Dante," Grace whispered softly, looking at Ethan laughing by the water and Lily sleeping peacefully in her arms. "They're safe. We're all safe."

"We are home, Grace," Dante whispered back, his voice full of deep, unshakable peace. "Forever."

As the embers of the twilight faded into night, the shadows were gone for good, and their sunshine shone bright, beautiful, and eternal.
