Chapter 11 - THE ECHO OF THE SYNDICATE

The wisteria was still in full bloom along the stone walls of the estate, but the serenity that had followed the wedding lasted less than three months.
Dante sat in his private study late at night, the fire in the hearth casting long, flickering shadows across the mahogany desk. For the past year, he had dismantled his empire piece by piece, converting illicit underground channels into legitimate businesses, trade foundations, and funding for Grace’s academy. The fearsome "Don of Chicago" was now a legitimate logistics magnate and philanthropist.
Yet, a shadow refused to leave the room.
A red leather folder rested in front of him. Marcus, his trusted head of security and lifelong friend, stood by the window, gazing out into the dark, mist-covered courtyard where Grace’s flowers swayed gently in the night breeze.
"Is it verified, Marcus?" Dante asked, his voice low and rich, echoing with the authority he had tried so hard to lay down.
"Verified," Marcus replied, turning around. "The remnants of the old Syndicate board didn't disappear after your father’s court downfall, Dante. Julian Rossi—the youngest nephew of Don Rossi—has returned from Milan. He’s gathered the old outfit loyalists who felt robbed when you went clean."
Dante’s sharp blue eyes narrowed. Julian Rossi was a sociopath with a refined education and a total lack of restraint. When Dante took over the family and severed ties with the drug trade, Julian had fled to Europe, swearing vengeance for what he called "the castration of Chicago's elite."
"What does Julian want?" Dante asked calmly, pouring two fingers of bourbon into a crystal glass.
"He doesn't want your money, Dante. He thinks you became soft because of Grace," Marcus said carefully. "He’s targeting the academy’s land deeds, threatening the diner downtown, and placing surveillance on the estate's supply trucks."
Dante stood up slowly, his tall, imposing figure casting a shadow across the room. The cold killer he had buried deep inside stirred. But then, the soft sound of bare feet on the hardwood floor made him pause.
The study door creaked open. Grace stepped inside, wearing a silk robe, her hair falling loosely over her shoulders. Her warm green eyes took in the heavy tension in the room, moving from Marcus's grim expression to the red file on Dante's desk.
"Dante?" she asked softly, stepping closer and resting her hand on his forearm. "What's wrong?"
Dante immediately softened his posture, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her gently against his side. "Nothing to worry about, my love. Just old business."
Grace looked up into his eyes, her gaze clear and piercing. "We swore no secrets, Dante. The shadows don't get to come back into our house."
Dante looked at Marcus, who gave a quiet nod and slipped out of the room, closing the door behind him. Dante brought Grace to the leather sofa, sitting down beside her and taking her small, warm hands into his broad, calloused palms.
"Julian Rossi is back in Chicago," Dante admitted quietly. "He believes my weakness is my love for you and Ethan."

Grace didn't flinch. The fragile girl who had once worked two jobs to afford rent was long gone. In her place stood a woman who had faced down rival dons and courtrooms for the man she loved.
"Then he doesn't know us at all," Grace said, her voice steady and resolute. "You aren't weak because you love us, Dante. You are indestructible because of it."
