Chapter 13 - THE THREAT UNVEILED

Three days later, the threat escalated from whispers to violence.
It happened during a charity luncheon at the historic Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago. Grace was speaking on behalf of the Grace Moretti Children’s Foundation, surrounded by city council members, business leaders, and old friends like Rosie. Dante stood near the back of the ballroom with Marcus, his sharp eyes scanning every guest, waiter, and security guard.
As Grace took the podium to applause, the lights in the grand ballroom flickered and dimmed.
A low, collective murmur ran through the crowd. Dante instantly moved toward the stage, his instincts screaming.
Suddenly, the large projection screens behind Grace cut out, replaced by a dark, high-definition video feed. The room fell dead silent.
On the screen was a live video stream of the estate's outer gates. A black car was parked outside, and a masked man held up a newspaper showing today's date. A suave, accented voice echoed through the ballroom speakers:
"Greetings, ladies and gentlemen of Chicago high society. And a special greeting to the reformed Don, Dante Moretti."
Gasps rippled through the audience. Grace stood frozen at the podium, her eyes locking onto Dante in the back of the room.
"You built a lovely fairy tale, Dante," Julian Rossi’s voice purred over the sound system. "A beautiful wife, a sweet little boy, an academy full of innocent children. But you built it on the graves of men who bled for the Syndicate. You don't get to walk away into the sunshine while the rest of us live in the dirt."
Dante reached into his jacket, pressing his ear comm. "Marcus, team two, lock down the estate now. Get Ethan into the panic room."
"Copy, boss. Team two is on it," Marcus’s voice crackled back.
On the screen, Julian’s voice grew darker. "This is your only warning, Dante. Hand over sixty percent of your shipping logistics network, or the sun sets on your little paradise forever. You have forty-eight hours."
The screen went black, and the ballroom erupted into chaos. Sirens began to wail in the distance as hotel security panicked.
Dante strode through the crowd like a lion, clearing a path directly to the stage. He reached Grace, pulling her into his arms. She was trembling slightly, but when she looked into his eyes, there was no fear—only fierce, protective rage.

"Is Ethan safe?" she demanded.
"Marcus is with him," Dante assured her, his voice like grinding steel. "Julian just made the biggest mistake of his life."
