Chapter 12 - WHISPERS IN THE WIND

The following morning, the sun broke over the lake, painting the estate in pale gold. At six years old, Ethan was a whirlwind of energy, running through the gardens with his toy wooden sword, shouting orders at imaginary dragons.

"Father! Look!" Ethan yelled, running up the stone steps toward Dante, who was standing on the terrace sipping his morning espresso.

Dante knelt on one knee, meeting his son at eye level. He adjusted the collar of Ethan's small jacket. "A fine attack, young knight. But remember, a true leader keeps his eyes open to his surroundings."

"Like you do?" Ethan asked, his bright eyes full of hero worship.

"Like we both do," Dante smiled, ruffling the boy's brown hair.

Grace joined them on the terrace, carrying a clipboard with schedules for the academy's new music wing. She kissed Dante's cheek before turning to Ethan. "Off to breakfast, little warrior. Rosie sent over a batch of fresh blueberry muffins from the diner."

Ethan cheered and dashed into the house.

Once Ethan was out of earshot, Grace's smile faded slightly. "Marcus told me you increased the security patrol along the perimeter last night."

"Julian is unpredictable," Dante explained, standing up and wrapping his arm around her waist. "I won't take chances with my family."

"I visited the academy yesterday," Grace said, looking out toward the driveway where two black SUVs were parked. "Two men in a gray sedan were parked across the street. They left as soon as my guards approached. Dante, he’s watching the children."

A cold, deadly rage flared behind Dante’s blue eyes, but he kept his expression calm for Grace. "He is trying to provoke me into making a mistake. He wants the old Dante back—the tyrant who would burn down a city block to prove a point."

"And you won't give him that," Grace insisted, turning to face him and resting her hands on his chest. "We do this legally and strategically. The police, the federal prosecutors you helped—we use the law you fought so hard to respect."

"Julian doesn't respect the law, Grace," Dante whispered, pressing his forehead against hers. "He only respects iron and fire."

"Then we make sure he sees both, but on our terms," Grace replied softly.
