Chapter 12 - Whispers from the Underworld

By midnight, the Bedford estate had been put under lockdown. Steel shutters descended over the tall windows, and thirty armed guards in sharp black suits patrolled the perimeter under Tommy’s strict command. Inside, nine-year-old Leo slept soundly in his fortified room, guarded by two loyal men.
In the basement command center, bank upon bank of monitors flickered with surveillance feeds from New York, Chicago, and Geneva.
"We ran the VIN on the SUV," Tommy reported, leaning over the console. "It traces back to a ghost company registered in Milan. Marco Vane isn't acting as a rogue agent. He’s working for an old syndicate ghost—a woman named Luciana Moretti."
Vincent stood behind Celia as she sat at the computer console, her fingers flying over the keyboard, decrypting high-level financial ledgers she had archived during the syndicate’s collapse.
"Luciana Moretti," Celia said, pulling up a dossier on screen. A sharp-featured woman with cold grey eyes stared back at them. "She was the head of the syndicate’s treasury in Europe. Everyone assumed she fled to South America after the fall."
"She didn't flee," Vincent said coldly. "She spent two years buying up mercenary groups, waiting for the heat to die down. Now she needs that third key to claim the syndicate’s offshore war chest."
"If she gets that fifty billion," Tommy added, "she can rebuild the entire syndicate network within six months. And her first target will be us."
Celia reached into her pocket and pulled out a worn black fountain pen—the last gift from her father. She had carried it with her every day, through courtrooms, battlegrounds, and peaceful gardens.
"Is it really inside here?" Celia asked quietly.
Vincent took the pen, unscrewed the silver barrel, and pressed a microscopic release near the nib. The lower housing clicked open, revealing a micro-driveshed in hardened glass.
"Your father didn't just fight the syndicate in court," Vincent revealed softly. "When he realized they were going to kill him, he intercepted their master key drive and hid it here. He left it to you because he knew you were the only person brilliant enough and brave enough to finish what he started."
Tears glistened in Celia’s eyes, but her jaw set into iron resolve. "Then we don't run from Luciana. We use this key to set a trap."
"No," Vincent interjected fiercely, grabbing her hand. "I won't put you or the children in danger again, Celia. I swore two years ago that the violence ended with me."
"Vincent," Celia looked up, her gaze steady and unwavering. "We aren't fighting with guns this time. We are fighting on my turf—the legal and financial grid. But to make it work, we need to draw Luciana out into the light."

Before Vincent could answer, the security alarm blared. Red light bathed the command center.
"Security breach at Gate 4!" Tommy shouted, drawing his sidearm. "They aren't waiting for morning!"
