Chapter 8 - The Chicago Standoff

The federal raid struck at dawn.
Four armored FBI vehicles and a dozen black sedans pulled into the long, gated driveway of the Evanston estate. Federal agents in blue jackets armed with assault rifles spilled onto the manicured lawn, establishing a perimeter.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Reed stepped up to the front doors, holding a thick stack of federal arrest warrants.
"Vincent Romano! This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation!" Reed bellowed through a bullhorn. "We have an arrest warrant for Celia Jace and a material witness warrant for Vincent Romano! Open the doors or we will breach!"
The heavy oak front doors swung open smoothly.
Vincent stepped out onto the marble portico. He was dressed in an impeccable tailored charcoal suit, looking every bit the untouchable billionaire titan. Beside him walked Celia, dressed in an elegant white silk dress, a brilliant diamond ring sparkling on her finger.
Behind them stood Arthur Vance and a team of six top-tier defense attorneys holding leather briefcases.
"You're trespassing on private property, Mr. Reed," Arthur Vance announced smoothly, stepping forward with a stack of legal documents.
"Save it for the judge, Vance!" Reed sneered, gesturing to his agents. "Take the girl into custody!"
Two agents stepped forward, pulling handcuffs from their belts.
Vincent immediately stepped in front of Celia, his towering frame blocking the agents. His dark eyes flashed with an aura so lethal that the two federal agents instinctively froze, their hands hovering near their sidearms.
"Touch my wife, and you will spend the rest of your career working traffic court in the Aleutian Islands," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm register.
Reed laughed mockingly. "Wife? Nice try, Romano. She was a waitress in Hell's Kitchen eight days ago. You can't play the marital privilege card on a fake cover story!"
Arthur Vance handed a certified legal document directly to Reed.
"It's not a cover story, Prosecutor," Vance said with a smug smile. "Mr. Romano and Miss Jace were legally married three hours ago by the Chief Magistrate of Cook County in a private ceremony at this residence. The marriage certificate has already been filed with the State of Illinois and uploaded to the federal court registry."
Reed’s smile vanished. His face flushed bright red as he scanned the official court seal on the document. "This is a sham! An obstruction of justice!"
"Then take it to a federal judge, Attorney Reed," Vance replied calmly. "Under Rule 501 of the Federal Rules of Evidence, Mrs. Celia Romano cannot be called to testify against her husband before a grand jury, nor can any statement she made to law enforcement be used in your RICO indictment."
Reed stared at Celia, then at Vincent, his teeth grinding in frustration. He knew he had been completely outmaneuvered. Without Celia’s eyewitness testimony connecting Vincent to the Chicago standoff and Simon’s fall, the federal case collapsed into circumstantial hearsay.
"This isn't over, Romano," Reed spat, throwing the papers to the ground. "I'll find something else."
"You're welcome to try," Vincent said coldly. "Now, get off my land."
Reed turned violently on his heel. "Fall back! All units, clear out!"
As the convoy of FBI vehicles backed down the driveway and vanished beyond the iron gates, the silence of the crisp morning settled over the estate.
Celia let out a long breath she felt like she had been holding for days. She looked up at Vincent, who was looking down at her with a gentle, proud smile.
"Mrs. Romano," Vincent said softly, the words sounding heavy and meaningful on his tongue. "How does it sound?"
Celia looked down at the glittering ring on her hand, then looked up into Vincent’s eyes, a genuine smile breaking across her face.

"It sounds like a fresh start," she whispered.
Vincent took her hand, lifting it to his lips, pressing a warm kiss against her knuckles. "Let's go home."
