Chapter 4 - The Lakefront Ambush

Chicago greeted them with a brutal, biting gale blowing off Lake Michigan. The sky was the color of wet slate, throwing down a mixture of freezing rain and slush that coated the tarmac of a private airfield near Gary, Indiana.
"We move fast," Tommy ordered as the jet's stairs lowered. "Simon’s scanners monitor Midway and O'Hare, but Gary is controlled by local dockworkers loyal to Vincent’s father. We have three vehicles waiting."
They loaded Leo onto an armored transport vehicle equipped as a mobile ICU. Dr. Sterling never left the boy’s side. Celia climbed in beside him, holding Leo’s cold fingers while Vincent took the front passenger seat of the lead SUV.
Their destination was the Great Lakes Logistics Hub—a sprawling, sixty-acre industrial complex on the South Side of Chicago. It was Simon’s nerve center, housing the primary servers, shipping manifests, and security teams that controlled the Midwest distribution networks.
"Simon has summoned the heads of the Detroit, Kansas City, and Chicago Outfit to the executive boardroom at the terminal," Vincent explained as the convoy sped down the slick interstate. "He’s presenting them with forged documents claiming I transferred power to him before my 'death'."
"If we just march in there, it’s a bloodbath," Celia said, her voice tight with anxiety.
"It will be a bloodbath regardless," Vincent said, pulling a custom steel-framed pistol from his shoulder holster and checking the slide. "The only question is whose blood cleans the floor."
As the three armored SUVs turned onto the access road leading to the shipping yards, the sky darkened further. Massive rows of colorful steel shipping containers towered over the asphalt like a artificial labyrinth.
Suddenly, a loud screech of metal cut through the air.
BANG!
A massive overhead gantry crane dropped a forty-foot steel shipping container directly onto the lead vehicle of their convoy. The crushing impact echoed across the yard like a bomb blast, crushing the front SUV instantly.
"Ambush!" Tommy roared, spinning the wheel of their vehicle.
Automatic weapon fire erupted from the tops of the surrounding shipping containers. Bullets rained down like hail, tearing into the armored glass and heavy plating of the SUV.
"Get down!" Vincent shouted, grabbing Celia by the back of her coat and pulling her beneath the level of the windows.
The SUV swerved violently, tires smoking on the wet pavement, before slamming into a stack of wooden pallets.
"They were waiting for us! Someone tipped them off!" Tommy yelled, drawing his weapon as bullets splintered the dashboard.
"It wasn't a tip-off," Vincent said, his eyes scanning the surrounding towers of steel containers. "Simon knows how I think. He knew I’d use the Gary airfield."
Outside, heavy-caliber rounds continued to hammer the side of the vehicle. Through the spider-webbed, bulletproof glass, Celia saw dozens of armed men in tactical gear advancing through the maze of shipping containers, closing off every exit.
"Dr. Sterling! Is Leo hit?" Celia cried out, turning toward the back of the transport.
"The armor held, but the power grid to his life-support monitor is flickering!" Sterling shouted back over the deafening noise of gunfire. "If the secondary battery dies, the ventilator stops!"
Vincent’s jaw set hard. He turned to Celia, his dark eyes locked onto hers with absolute intensity.
"Tommy and I are going to clear a path to the main office tower," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm amid the chaotic storm of bullets. "Stay inside this vehicle. The moment the firing stops near the tower, you run for the executive elevator with Dr. Sterling and Leo."
"Vincent, you can't go out there alone!" Celia grabbed his arm, her fingers sinking into the fabric of his jacket. "There are too many of them!"
Vincent looked down at her hand on his arm, then looked up into her eyes. For a fraction of a second, the icy demeanor dissolved, revealing a fierce, protective warmth.
"They have guns, Celia," Vincent whispered, leaning in so close she could feel the heat of his breath against her cheek. "But I have a reason to live. Stay safe."
He reached out, his gloved thumb gently wiping a smudge of grease from her cheek, then turned toward the heavy steel door.
"Tommy! Flashbangs on three!" Vincent barked.
"Ready, Boss!"
"One... two... three!"
Vincent threw open the heavy door, hurling two flashbang grenades into the drizzling rain. Twin blasts of blinding white light and thunderous explosions rocked the alleyway between the shipping containers, disorienting the advancing mercenaries.
Vincent and Tommy stepped out into the storm of steel.
What followed was a display of brutal, calculated lethal precision. Vincent moved through the labyrinth of shipping containers like a phantom. Every shot he fired found its mark. Mercenaries fell from the tops of containers, crashing onto the pavement below. Tommy provided relentless suppressive fire, clearing corners with heavy shotgun rounds.
Celia watched through the cracked glass, her heart in her throat. She had spent her life trying to avoid violence, living in the quiet shadows of working-class New York. But watching Vincent fight—not for money or territory, but to protect his son and clear a path for her—she felt something shift deep inside her chest.
It wasn't fear anymore. It was a fierce, uncompromising trust.
"Path is clear!" Tommy’s voice crackled over the vehicle's intercom. "Move the transport to the lobby doors now!"
May you like
The driver slammed the transport into gear, plowing through the wreckage and roaring toward the glass-and-steel skyscraper at the center of the terminal.
They had reached the heart of Simon’s stronghold.
