Chapter 15 - Fractured Alliances

At 3:00 AM, a torrential rain began to fall over the docks of Jersey City—an eerie mirror to the night Vincent and Celia had first met years ago.
An abandoned warehouse at Pier 42 stood dark against the skyline. Outside, rain lashed against the windshield of Vincent’s armored sedan.
"Federal agents are in position three blocks out," Tommy reported over the encrypted comms line. "They’re holding back until you give the word, Vincent."
"Keep the perimeter tight, Tommy," Vincent commanded. "Protect my children with your life."
"On my soul, boss," Tommy replied.
Vincent turned to Celia. She looked magnificent—wearing a sharp navy coat over her dress, her hair pulled back, holding the tiny glass micro-drive in her palm.
"Ready?" Vincent asked, taking her hand.
"Always," she answered.
They stepped out into the pouring rain and entered the massive warehouse. Industrial lights flickered overhead, casting long shadows across crates and rusty machinery.
Standing in the center of the floor was Luciana Moretti, flanked by Marco Vane and ten mercenaries armed with submachine guns.
"Vincent Romano," Luciana said, her voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "The legendary Lion of Chicago... reduced to a domestic family man. How touching."
"Cut the talk, Luciana," Vincent said, stepping in front of Celia protectively. "Where are the detonators for the water plants?"
"Hand over the key first," Marco Vane demanded, stepping forward with his weapon raised.
Celia stepped out from behind Vincent, holding up the glowing micro-drive between her fingers.
"The key is right here, Marco," Celia said calmly. "But you know as well as I do that if you kill us, the drive self-destructs upon impact. You need me to bypass the multi-factor judicial lock."
Luciana’s eyes flared with greed. "Smart girl. Bring it here. Connect it to the terminal."
Luciana gestured to a high-powered satellite terminal resting on a steel drum in the center of the floor.
Celia walked forward with steady steps, the rain dripping from her coat. Vincent stayed two paces behind her, his hand resting inside his coat, his posture coiled like a lethal spring.
As Celia approached the terminal, she looked Luciana dead in the eye. "You think money will bring back the empire, Luciana? The world has moved on. The syndicate is dead."

"The syndicate dies when I say it dies!" Luciana snapped. "Plug it in!"
Celia inserted the micro-drive into the reader.
