Chapter 5 - The Retaliation

The drive back to Callaway Tower was silent, but it was no longer the silence of strangers. Isla sat next to Roman, her hands trembling in her lap, the adrenaline finally leaving her system.
"You took a big risk back there," she said, looking out at the rain. "For me. For Noah. Why?"
Roman didn't look at her, but his hand moved, his fingers resting briefly over hers on the leather seat. "I told you, Isla. I hate men who build cages. When I was seven, my father was evicted from his shop by a landlord who used a crooked city inspector to condemn the building. My father died of a heart attack three months later, trying to pay off the debt. I promised myself then that if I ever obtained power, I would use it to rip the roofs off men who think they are gods."
He turned his head to look at her, his eyes softening in a way that very few living people had ever seen. "And you have courage, Isla. Most people in your position would have taken a check and run. You stood there and looked them in the eye. That’s worth more to me than any asset I own."
When they arrived at the penthouse, Isla rushed to the nursery setup. Noah was awake, being gently held by the nurse Roman had hired. Seeing her child safe, beautiful, and warm, Isla finally wept—heavy, cleansing tears that washed away the horror of the past week.
But while Isla found temporary peace, the Voss family was entering a state of absolute panic.
In a private cigar lounge in the South District, Carl Voss slammed his fist onto a mahogany table. "He bought the debt? How did he even get the signatures from the board?"
"Callaway has leverage on everyone, Carl," said Judge Alvarez, who was sitting in the corner, his face pale and sweating. "He knows about the Cabo trip. He knows about the shell companies. If the state judicial board gets hold of those financial logs, I’m not just disbarred—I’m going to federal prison."
"We can't let it get to court," Carl hissed. He turned to Callum, who was trembling in an armchair. "Your little graphic designer friend has the original flash drive with the environmental data, don't she?"
"Yes," Callum stammered. "But it's in a safety deposit box at First National. She has the only key."
Carl leaned in, his eyes turning murderous. "Then we get the key. Callaway thinks he’s untouchable because he owns the buildings. He forgets that the streets at night still belong to the people who don't care about leases."
The next evening, Isla was alone in the ninth-floor apartment. Roman was at a late-night board meeting across town. Davis was stationed at the main lobby desk, monitoring the security feeds.
Suddenly, the lights in the apartment flickered and died.
The hum of the HVAC system stopped.
Isla froze in the darkness, her heart leaping into her throat. She picked up the encrypted phone Roman had given her, but the screen read: NO SIGNAL. A localized jammer.

Through the silence of the dark apartment, she heard a sound that made her blood turn to ice.
The faint, mechanical click of the front door lock turning from the outside.
