Chapter 10 - The Promise

Spring arrived in the city, melting the last of the gray winter snow and replacing it with bright green leaves on the trees along Meridian Avenue. The east stairwell of Callaway Tower, once a place of cold exile, had been repainted and decorated with a beautiful mural painted by Isla—a depiction of a night sky turning into a brilliant dawn, with a small silver thread running through the design.
It was a monument to where they had started, a reminder that the lowest points in life can sometimes be the foundation for the highest peaks.
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in May, Roman closed Callaway Tower to the public. The grand marble lobby was filled with flowers—white lilies and roses—and a small, intimate gathering of those who mattered most. Davis stood by the entrance, wearing a crisp new suit and a proud smile, acting as the best man. Marcus stood nearby, holding Noah, who was dressed in a tiny, custom-made tuxedo that matched Roman’s perfectly.
Isla walked down the grand marble staircase, her arm linked with Davis, who escorted her down the final steps. She wore a simple, elegant white silk dress that flowed around her like water, her hair loose and wavy, catching the warm afternoon sunlight filtering through the glass doors.
Roman stood at the altar, his face completely transformed. The hardened, unyielding mafia boss was gone, replaced by a man who looked at peace, a man who looked at his bride with an adoration that was absolute.
When Davis placed Isla’s hand in Roman’s, Roman leaned in and whispered, "You are the most beautiful thing this building has ever seen."
"I love you, Roman," she replied, her eyes shining with joy.
The vows were short, simple, and unscripted. They didn't need legal terms or complicated contracts. They spoke of shelter, of resilience, of a love that had been forged in the coldest corners of the city and brought into the light.
"I promise to build a world where you and Noah will never have to look for a door that locks from the outside," Roman said, his voice deep and steady. "Because my heart is your home, and it is completely open to you."

"And I promise to keep your fire warm, Roman," Isla responded, her voice trembling with happiness. "To remind you that you don't have to fight the shadows alone anymore. We are your family, now and always."
As the minister pronounced them husband and wife, Roman pulled Isla into a deep, passionate kiss, while the small crowd cheered, and little Noah let out a loud, joyful babble from Marcus's arms, as if signing his own approval on the family contract.
