Chapter 1 - The Awakening of the Ghost

The sterile glare of the Manhattan private hospital corridor was punctuated only by the erratic, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor echoing through the heavy glass doors of Room 412. Daniel Salgado stood in the shadow of the doorway, his hands clenched so tightly inside his pockets that his knuckles shone white beneath calloused skin. Nineteen years. For nineteen years, he had buried Daniel Salgado deep beneath the persona of a quiet widower in Queens, flipping pancakes, driving an old pickup truck, and playing the part of a harmless, ordinary father. He had kept his vow to Elena. He had locked away the blood, the ledgers, the coded phone lines, and the fear that his name once commanded across the entire East Coast.
But looking at the final sentence his daughter Renata had scratched into her bloodstained notebook just before the monitors began screaming, Daniel felt the ice water of absolute fury freeze every drop of blood in his veins.
Mom’s accident wasn’t an accident.
And beneath it, a name he had not spoken aloud in two decades: Julian Vance.
The door burst open, and Dr. Harrison rushed out, pulling off his blue surgical gloves with frantic speed. “Mr. Salgado! Her heart rate spiked, but we’ve stabilized her. She’s sleeping now, but the trauma to her jaw and the shock to her system—listen to me, she needs absolute quiet. Another shock like that and—”
“She’s going to be fine, Doctor,” Daniel interrupted. His voice was not loud. It was a low, velvet hum that carried the chilling weight of an executioner pronouncing a sentence.
Dr. Harrison blinked, momentarily taken aback by the sudden shift in the quiet, humble father he had been speaking to minutes earlier. There was a razor-sharp edge in Daniel’s dark eyes that made the seasoned surgeon instinctively take a step back.
“I’ll leave you with her,” the doctor muttered, hurrying down the hall.
Daniel stepped back into the sterile room. Renata lay motionless under the thin white sheet, her face swathed in gauze, the metal brace locking her shattered jaw. He gently reached down, slipping the silver key stamped with the number 214 into his coat pocket alongside the bloodstained notebook.
His phone buzzed quietly against his thigh. He pulled it out. The screen displayed a single text message from the encrypted burner number he had dialed moments before:
The archives are unlocked. Cordova, Beltran, Varela assets are mapped. As for Julian Vance... he’s been waiting for you to call for twenty years.
Daniel’s jaw tightened. Julian Vance. The man who had once been his most trusted lieutenant, the man who knew every hidden dock and shell corporation in the syndicate, and the man who had vanished the exact same week Elena’s car went plunging off an isolated highway bridge in upstate New York. For nineteen years, Daniel had believed it was a tragic piece of black ice on a freezing night.

Now, looking at his daughter’s broken face, he knew the truth. It wasn't ice. It was an execution. And the three arrogant billionaire heirs—Santiago Cordova, Maurice Beltran, and Emmett Varela—hadn't just randomly targeted Renata on a college campus. They had been used as pawns in a much larger, darker game designed to draw the Ghost out of his grave.
Well, they had succeeded. The Ghost was awake. And this time, there were no rules left to follow.
