Chapter 6 - The Ghost Steps Out of the Shadows

With Cordova, Beltran, and Varela thoroughly destroyed, the final piece of the puzzle remained: Julian Vance.
Daniel stood on the observation deck of a private heliport overlooking the glittering expanse of Central Park South. The cold autumn wind whipped his coat around his legs as a sleek twin-engine helicopter touched down on the tarmac, kicking up a furious whirlwind of dust and debris.
The cabin door slid open, and two armed mercenaries stepped out, followed closely by Julian Vance himself. Julian was dressed in a pristine tuxedo, holding a silver-handled cane, looking every bit the ruthless mastermind who had usurped the underworld.
“Well, Daniel,” Julian called out over the roar of the idling rotors, a dark smile spreading across his face. “You certainly dismantled my little puppets with impressive speed. I have to hand it to you—The Ghost hasn't lost his touch.”
Daniel stepped forward into the amber glow of the runway lights. His hands were resting calmly in his pockets. “You used my daughter to draw me out, Julian. You thought by breaking her jaw, you could force a confrontation on your terms.”
“I wanted what was mine,” Julian spat, his smile vanishing, replaced by a bitter, venomous hatred. “You walked away and left billions on the table to play house in Queens with a woman who didn't even know who you really were! You betrayed the syndicate, Daniel!”
“I protected my family,” Daniel said quietly. “Something you were never capable of doing.”
Julian raised his hand, and instantly, six armed men emerged from the shadows behind the helicopter, raising their suppressed rifles directly at Daniel’s chest.
“Family is a weakness, Daniel,” Julian sneered, stepping back behind his guard unit. “And tonight, your family history ends right here on this rooftop.”
Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't raise his hands in surrender. Instead, he simply pulled his phone from his pocket and tapped a single green button.
Click.
Across the city skyline, every major digital billboard, luxury hotel television screen, and financial ticker suddenly flickered. The live feeds broadcasting the high-society gala below cut out instantly, replaced by a single, crystal-clear high-definition video file streaming directly from Daniel’s secure terminal.
It was a recording of Julian Vance meticulously tampering with the brake lines of Elena Salgado’s car nineteen years ago, complete with audio of Julian laughing as he walked away from the vehicle.
The audio boomed across the entire park district through the massive stadium speakers of the surrounding luxury towers. Thousands of guests at the nearby charity galas stopped dancing, turning their heads upward in absolute horror as Julian’s treasonous confession echoed through the night air.
Julian’s face drained of all color. He stared up at the giant digital billboard overlooking Central Park displaying his own crime in glaring 4K resolution.
“No...” Julian whispered, his hands trembling as he dropped his cane. “No, that’s—that’s encrypted! How did you—?”
“You forgot who built the network, Julian,” Daniel said, walking slowly toward him as the six armed mercenaries suddenly lowered their weapons, their earpieces crackling with automated override codes issued by Daniel’s central server.

“Drop your weapons,” Thomas’s voice boomed over the perimeter loudspeakers.
The mercenaries dropped their rifles to the tarmac and stepped back, leaving Julian standing entirely alone on the helipad.
