Chapter 4 - The Senator’s Scandal

Senator Eleanor Beltran was a master of political theater. Standing behind the podium in the Senate press briefing room in Washington, D.C., she adjusted her pearls and delivered a passionate speech about law, order, and educational reform. Her son, Maurice Beltran, was a rising star in collegiate circles—even if he occasionally dabbled in things his campaign managers preferred to keep quiet.

In the front row of reporters, a quiet man in a gray trench coat slipped an unmarked manila envelope onto the press table before turning and walking silently toward the exit.

A veteran investigative journalist sitting nearby noticed the envelope, picked it up, and slid out the contents.

His eyes widened.

Inside were high-resolution bank statements, encrypted email threads, and audio transcripts detailing a massive kickback scheme involving illegal foreign campaign contributions, insider trading, and a slush fund used to silence witnesses in three separate hit-and-run accidents involving Maurice.

Within twenty minutes, the journalist walked up to the side microphone during the Q&A session.

“Senator Beltran,” the reporter interrupted sharply, ignoring the protocol. “How do you respond to allegations that your re-election campaign has been funded by offshore shell corporations tied to illegal arms trafficking, and that your office actively suppressed police reports regarding your son’s criminal activities?”

The press room erupted into chaos. Flashbulbs blinded the senator as dozens of microphones were thrust toward her face. Color drained entirely from Eleanor Beltran’s cheeks. She gripped the edges of the podium so hard her knuckles turned white, her carefully constructed political career disintegrating in real-time under the blinding white-hot light of undeniable truth.

That evening, as Maurice Beltran sat in his luxury fraternity penthouse drinking imported champagne and laughing about the police station incident, the television news anchor broke in with a special emergency broadcast.

“Breaking news: Federal agents have raided the Washington and New York campaign headquarters of Senator Eleanor Beltran amid sweeping allegations of corruption, extortion, and obstruction of justice. Warrants have also been issued for the immediate arrest of her son, Maurice Beltran…”

The champagne flute slipped from Maurice’s fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor as the television screen displayed his own face alongside federal arrest warrants.
