Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Julian stumbled backward, tripping over his own cane as Daniel closed the distance between them. The confident, untouchable mastermind was gone, replaced by a cornered rat facing the absolute wrath of the Ghost.
“Daniel—wait, wait!” Julian pleaded, holding his hands up defensively. “We’re brothers! We built this city together! You can’t kill me!”
“I’m not going to kill you, Julian,” Daniel said softly, stopping two feet away from him. “Death is too easy. It’s a clean exit.”
“Then what—what are you going to do?” Julian choked out, sweat beading on his forehead.
“You’re going to experience what it means to truly vanish,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into that chilling, subterranean register that had once made entire syndicates tremble. “No bank accounts. No aliases. No passport. No face in any mirror that recognizes who you are. You will be erased from every ledger, every court record, and every memory in this country.”
Before Julian could scream, Thomas and two operatives stepped out of the shadows, grabbing him by the arms. They slapped a heavy titanium restraint collar around his neck—a secure tracking device tied directly to federal maximum-security transport—and bundled him violently into the back of an unmarked van idling near the helipad.

The doors slammed shut. The van sped away into the night, carrying Julian Vance toward a destination where his name would never, ever be spoken again.
Daniel stood alone on the rooftop, watching the tail-lights disappear into the Manhattan traffic. The wind blew past him, rustling his coat. For nineteen years, he had tried to bury the Ghost. But tonight, he realized the Ghost had never truly belonged to the underworld. It had always belonged to his family.
