Chapter 10 - The Last Pancake

The autumn leaves swirled outside the window of the Queens apartment, painting the sidewalks in shades of gold and amber.
Inside, the warm scent of coffee and vanilla filled the air. Renata was packing her backpack for her first day back at university, moving with a renewed sense of confidence and strength that could never be broken again.
Daniel leaned against the kitchen counter, sipping his coffee, watching her with quiet pride.
“You have everything?” he asked gently.
Renata zipped up her bag, slung it over her shoulder, and walked over to give her father a tight, fierce hug.
“I have everything I need, Dad,” she whispered into his shoulder.
She pulled back, smiled, and grabbed a final piece of toast from the counter before heading out the front door. “See you tonight! Don't burn dinner!”
“No promises!” Daniel called out with a chuckle.
The front door clicked shut. The apartment fell into a quiet, peaceful silence.
Daniel walked over to the kitchen table, picked up Renata’s empty plate, and carried it to the sink. As he turned on the faucet, running warm water over the ceramic, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the old silver key stamped with the number 214.
He walked over to the small wall safe hidden behind a calendar in the pantry, opened the heavy steel door, and placed the key inside.

Then he locked it.
He closed the safe, straightened the calendar, and walked back to the stove to finish cleaning up. The Ghost was gone forever. There was only Daniel Salgado—a father, a protector, and a man who loved his daughter more than life itself. And as the morning sun warmed the small kitchen, he knew that no matter what shadows ever tried to return, love would always hold the final light.
