Chapter 9 - Shadows Fading

Two weeks later, the hospital discharged Renata, and Daniel drove her back to the quiet apartment in Queens.

The media circus surrounding the fall of the Cordova, Beltran, and Varela families dominated the front pages of every newspaper in the country. Federal prosecutors announced a sweeping anti-corruption task force that had dismantled billion-dollar white-collar crime syndicates overnight, citing anonymous whistleblowers who had provided airtight forensic evidence.

None of the reports ever mentioned the name Daniel Salgado.

To the public, he remained the quiet widower who ran an obscure auto-parts importing business in Queens.

On a bright Sunday morning, the smell of sweet maple syrup and slightly scorched batter drifted through the small kitchen. Renata sat at the kitchen table, her jaw brace finally removed, replaced by a discreet retainer. Her face still bore faint traces of bruising, but her eyes were bright, fierce, and alive.

Daniel placed a plate of pancakes in front of her, sliding a fresh cup of coffee beside it.

“You know,” Renata said, looking up at him with a knowing glint in her eyes, “for a guy who runs an auto-parts shop, you seem to know a lot of people in high places.”

Daniel paused, the spatula still in his hand. He looked at his daughter—the brilliant, resilient young woman who had inherited his strength and her mother’s fierce spirit.

“Parts delivery can be a very complicated business, sweetheart,” Daniel replied smoothly, maintaining a deadpan expression.

Renata laughed—a bright, clear, musical sound that filled the small apartment with warmth and joy.

Daniel smiled back, setting the spatula down on the counter. He looked out the kitchen window toward the bustling Queens street below. The past was buried. The score was settled. And the Ghost was finally, truly at peace.
