Chapter 8 - Return to the Light

The morning sun filtered through the sheer white curtains of Room 412 at the Manhattan private hospital, casting warm, golden squares across the tiled floor.

Renata stirred beneath her blanket, her eyelids fluttering open. The sharp, agonizing fog of heavy pain medication was beginning to lift. She blinked a few times, trying to focus her vision.

Sitting in the chair beside her bed was her father.

He looked tired, the faint stubble on his jaw showing silver in the morning light, but he was wearing his old gray cardigan—the one with the frayed cuffs and the ink stain on the pocket from his auto-parts shop in Queens.

On the bedside table sat a ceramic plate holding two slightly burnt pancakes covered in maple syrup.

Renata tried to speak, but the metal brace and swelling made it impossible. A single tear rolled down her cheek, partly from the lingering pain, but mostly from the overwhelming wave of safety that washed over her.

Daniel stood up, gently wiping the tear away with his thumb. He picked up the fork, cut a small piece of the burnt pancake, and held it out to her.

“I burned the first batch again,” Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face. “Some things never change.”

Renata managed a weak, lopsided smile through her bandages, opening her mouth to accept the bite.

She didn't know everything about her father's past. She didn't know about the secret warehouses in Long Island, the offshore bank accounts, or the empire that had risen and fallen in a single week to avenge her honor.

And she didn't need to.

All she knew was that the quiet, humble man who made burnt pancakes on Sunday mornings was her father. And no matter what monsters lurked in the shadows of the world, she was safe in his arms.
