Chapter 5 - The Fall of Varela

The Varela family name was carved into limestone across half of Manhattan. Libraries, research wings, and cultural centers bore their crest. Emmett Varela, the quietest and most sadistic of the three heirs who had watched Renata get beaten near the science building, believed his family’s philanthropy made them completely bulletproof.
He was currently seated in the VIP lounge of a private members-only club in downtown Manhattan, surrounded by high-society associates.
“Relax,” Emmett smirked, swirling a glass of bourbon. “My old man has already bought off the university trustees. The girl’s father is some nobody auto-parts mechanic in Queens. By next week, the whole thing will be buried.”
The heavy mahogany doors of the private club swung open.
There were no federal agents this time. Just four men in tailored charcoal suits wearing leather gloves. They didn't draw weapons. They didn't shout. They simply walked in with the absolute, terrifying precision of an execution squad.
The club manager rushed forward, stammering, “Excuse me! Private event! You can’t—do you know whose son is sitting over—?”
The lead enforcer, Thomas, flashed a small, heavy gold signet ring bearing the crest of a wolf entwined with an anchor—the ancient crest of the Ghost. The club manager choked on his words, stepped backward, and immediately walked out of the room, locking the door behind him.
Emmett stood up, his arrogant smirk faltering. “What is this? Who the hell do you think you are?”
Thomas walked up to the table, grabbed Emmett by the collar of his designer shirt, and hoisted him out of his chair as if he weighed nothing at all.
“Mr. Salgado sends his regards,” Thomas said coldly.
“Salgado? The mechanic from Queens? My dad will have you skinned alive!” Emmett shrieked, thrashing against the enforcer's grip.

“Your father’s shipping empire was seized forty minutes ago,” Thomas replied calmly. “Every warehouse, every trust fund, and every charitable foundation bearing your family name has been audited, frozen, and reallocated by federal receivers acting on documents provided by Daniel Salgado.”
Emmett’s knees buckled. The terrifying reality washed over him. They hadn't just attacked an ordinary college student. They had kicked a sleeping tiger that controlled the shadows of the entire eastern seaboard.
