Chapter 10 - The Warm Washcloth

One Year Later.
The Moretti estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of a summer morning.
The once-dreaded compound had become a home filled with life, security, and love. Children’s laughter filled the halls, fresh flowers bloomed in every window, and the house staff worked with bright smiles, knowing they were part of a true family.
In the master bedroom, the french doors were open, letting in a cool morning breeze from the lake.
Sophia sat on the plush sofa, cradling a beautiful, three-month-old baby girl with dark hair and bright hazel eyes—little Isabella Moretti.
Alessandro sat beside her, his arm wrapped around Sophia’s shoulders, staring down at his newborn daughter with absolute awe and tenderness.
On the floor near the balcony, four-year-old Emma sat beside Bruno.
The old Cane Corso was four years older now, his muzzle almost entirely gray, but his eyes were bright, peaceful, and completely free of pain thanks to daily medical care and abundant love.
Emma held a small plastic basin of warm water, a yellow ducky toy, and a fresh washcloth.
She carefully dipped the cloth into the warm water, squeezed it out, and began gently wiping Bruno’s large, graying ears.
"You're a good boy, Bruno," Emma whispered softly to the dog. "You don't have ouchies anymore. And Daddy built us a big playground."
Bruno closed his eyes, letting out a deep, satisfied sigh, resting his heavy muzzle on Emma’s lap, just as he had done on that snowy courtyard stone long ago.
Alessandro looked over at his daughter and the war dog, then turned to look at his radiant wife holding their baby.
He remembered the day he had stood under the stone archway, watching a terrified, exhausted maid’s toddler approach a vicious beast with nothing but a warm washcloth and a gentle heart.
He realized then that the empire he had spent a lifetime building with guns and money was nothing compared to the empire of love that a three-year-old child had brought to its knees.
Alessandro leaned over, pressing a tender kiss against Sophia’s lips, then kissed the forehead of his baby daughter.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" Sophia asked softly, smiling into his eyes.

Alessandro looked out at the sunlit garden, holding his family close, feeling a peace that would last for the rest of his days.
"I’m thinking," Alessandro smiled warmly, "that a warm washcloth can accomplish what armed guards never could."
