Chapter 6 - The Lion's Fury

The corridors beneath the estate were a dark, subterranean maze of stone arches, wooden wine casks, and ancient storage vaults.

Sophia ran through the darkness, her lungs burning, clutching Emma tightly against her chest. Behind them, the sounds of shouting mercenaries and Bruno’s terrifying, echoing snarls bounced off the damp stone walls.

"Mommy! I'm scared!" Emma sobbed, burying her face in Sophia's neck.

"I know, baby, I know," Sophia gasped, ducking into a small alcove behind a row of oak wine barrels. "Mommy’s got you. Stay quiet, sweetie. Shh."

Footsteps crunched against the gravel floor outside the alcove.

Dominic walked down the central aisle of the wine cellar, holding a flashlight in one hand and a pistol in the other. Behind him walked his chief lieutenant, a giant man named Viktor, holding a heavy tactical shotgun.

"Come out, come out, little maid," Dominic’s taunting voice echoed through the dark vault. "Alessandro is bleeding out in the foyer right now. Your little protector is finished. If you bring the girl out now, I might just let you live to clean my apartments in New York."

Sophia pressed her back against the cold stone, holding her hand firmly over Emma’s mouth to muffle her soft sobs.

Suddenly, a shot rang out from the top of the cellar stairs.

BANG! BANG!

Viktor, Dominic's chief lieutenant, crumpled to the floor, a bullet hole drilled cleanly between his eyes.

Dominic spun around in absolute terror, shining his flashlight toward the top of the stone staircase.

Descending the stairs through the drifting gun smoke was Alessandro Moretti.

His white shirt was soaked in blood from his shoulder wound, his dark hair was wild, and his eyes burned with an incandescent, terrifying rage that didn't belong to a human man—it belonged to a demon rising straight from hell.

In his right hand, Alessandro held his custom pistol. In his left hand, he held a heavy tactical knife.

"Alessandro..." Dominic stammered, backing away slowly, his confidence completely shattering into blind panic. "How... how are you still breathing?!"

"You forgot one thing, Dominic," Alessandro said, his voice a low, vibrating growl that shook the stone walls. "This is my house."

Behind Dominic, a bloody, battle-scarred black shape emerged from the darkness.

Bruno.

The dog was bleeding from a graze on his flank, but his eyes were bright, his jaws wet with enemy blood. He stepped up beside Alessandro, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with his master, forming a deadly, unbreakable line of retribution.

Dominic raised his pistol with shaking hands. "STAY BACK! I'LL KILL YOU BOTH!"

Alessandro didn't even flinch. He walked forward at a steady, unstoppable pace.

"You threatened my family, Dominic," Alessandro whispered.

Dominic fired a wild shot. The bullet whizzed past Alessandro's ear, shattering a wine bottle behind him.

Before Dominic could pull the trigger a second time, Alessandro lunged forward.

With lightning speed, Alessandro grabbed Dominic’s gun arm, twisting it upward with a sickening CRACK! of breaking bone. Dominic screamed in agony, dropping the weapon.

Alessandro grabbed his brother by the throat, slamming him violently against the stone wall, lifting him two inches off the floor.

"Please... Alessandro..." Dominic choked out, tears of pain and terror streaming down his face. "We're... brothers... blood..."

Alessandro stared into his brother's panicked eyes, his grip tightening until Dominic’s face turned blue.

"Blood means nothing if there is no honor in it," Alessandro said icy cold.

He shoved Dominic backward onto the floor.

Before Dominic could scramble up, Bruno lunged forward, pinning Dominic to the ground with his heavy paws, his massive jaws hovering one inch from Dominic’s exposed throat, letting out a low, terrifying growl that froze Dominic in place.

"Don't move, Dominic," Alessandro commanded softly, picking up his dropped gun. "If you breathe too loud, he will tear your throat out."

Sophia stepped out from the dark alcove, holding Emma securely in her arms.

Emma looked at Alessandro, then at Bruno standing over the bad man.

"Mr. Moretti!" Emma cried out, tears spilling down her cheeks. "You came back!"

Alessandro dropped his gun into its holster. He walked over to Sophia and Emma, completely ignoring his sobbing brother on the floor.

He reached out his trembling, blood-stained right hand, gently cupping Emma’s soft cheek.

"I told you I would always come back for you, little one," Alessandro murmured, his voice cracking with deep, overwhelming emotion.

He looked up at Sophia. Her brown eyes were filled with tears, but as she looked at him—bleeding, exhausted, yet standing triumphant—she didn't see a mafia boss. She saw the man who had fought through an army to keep her and her daughter alive.

Sophia leaned forward and pressed her forehead against his chest, right over his beating heart. "Thank God you're safe," she sobbed softly.

Alessandro wrapped his strong arm around both Sophia and Emma, pulling them tight against his chest, closing his eyes as relief finally washed over him.
