Chapter 2 - Shadows over the Estate

Three weeks passed, and the winter weather hardened into a bitter, freezing January.
The dynamic on the Moretti estate had subtly, permanently shifted. The house staff—cooks, maids, groundskeepers, and armed guards—had spent months treating Sophia Carter as just another temporary domestic worker struggling to keep her head above water after her husband’s tragic workplace accident two years prior.
Now, everything was different.
When Sophia walked through the grand kitchen to prepare Emma’s breakfast, the head chef, an old Italian woman named Rosa, no longer handed her stale bread or cold tea. Instead, Rosa set aside fresh eggs, warm pastries, and rich bone broth for Bruno.
"He ate two pounds of raw beef this morning," Rosa grumbled with a fond smile as Emma sat on a high kitchen stool, swinging her legs while eating oatmeal. "That dog hasn't eaten like this in three years. The little one has magic in her hands."
"She doesn't have magic, Rosa," Sophia said with a weary smile, wiping a spot of honey from Emma’s chin. "She just doesn't know she’s supposed to be afraid."
"Sometimes that’s the same thing, child," Rosa replied softly, her tone turning serious. She leaned over the stainless-steel counter, dropping her voice to a whisper. "Be careful, Sophia. The boss’s younger brother, Dominic, arrived from New York last night. He brought four of his own men. They are staying in the west wing."
Sophia’s hands paused on the dish towel.
Dominic Moretti.
Even in her short time at the estate, Sophia had heard whispers about Dominic. Where Alessandro was controlled, calculating, and bound by a strict code of honor, his younger brother was chaotic, cruel, and deeply envious of Alessandro’s control over the family empire. Dominic ran the syndicate’s dark, illegal gambling rings on the East Coast and had long argued that Alessandro’s traditional methods were making the family soft.
"Why is he here?" Sophia whispered.
"The commission meeting is next week," Rosa murmured, casting a quick glance toward the security cameras in the hallway corner. "Dominic wants a bigger share of the shipping docks. He thinks Alessandro is getting weak. He saw the dog sleeping in your hallway yesterday, and he laughed. He told his men the great Alessandro Moretti was letting a maid’s bastard soft-tame his war beast."
Sophia felt a sudden drop in her stomach. "Emma isn't a bastard. My husband—"
"I know, honey, I know," Rosa soothed, touching Sophia’s arm gently. "Just keep the little girl close today. Dominic isn't like his brother. He looks at people like things to be used or broken."
Twenty minutes later, Sophia was walking across the courtyard toward the laundry building, carrying a heavy basket of fresh linens. Emma trotted beside her, holding a wooden spoon like a magic wand, while Bruno limped loyally two steps behind her, his graying muzzle frosted with snow.
As they reached the stone fountain, a loud, grating laugh echoed from the balcony above.
Sophia looked up.
A man in a sleek leather coat stood on the second-floor terrace, leaning over the stone railing. He had dark, slicked-back hair, a thin mustache, and cold, mocking eyes.
Dominic Moretti.
Beside him stood two heavy-set men in dark leather jackets, both holding smoking cigarettes.
"Well, well," Dominic called down, his voice dripping with venomous amusement. "Is that the legendary monster of the Moretti family? The great hound that bit off Frankie’s thumb in Chicago?"
Bruno stopped in his tracks. His ears flattened against his skull. A low, thunderous growl began deep in his chest—a sound so dark and guttural that Sophia instinctively dropped her laundry basket and grabbed Emma’s hand, pulling her daughter behind her skirt.
Dominic leaned over the railing, spitting onto the snow below. "Look at him. Half-blind, limping, obeying a little peasant girl. Alessandro should have put a bullet in that dog’s brain two years ago when his hip failed."
Emma peeked out from behind her mother’s dress. She didn't understand the complex politics of the mafia, but she understood when someone was being mean to her friend.
"He is not a monster!" Emma shouted, her tiny voice echoing across the courtyard. "He is Bruno! And he is handsome!"
Dominic’s laughter instantly cut off. His eyes narrowed as he stared down at the three-year-old child who had dared to address him.
"What did you say to me, you little brat?" Dominic sneered, stepping toward the balcony stairs.
"Emma, hush!" Sophia gasped, her face going deathly pale. She pulled Emma fully behind her, standing like a shield between her daughter and the dangerous man descending the stairs.
Dominic reached the snow-covered cobblestones, his heavy boots crunching against the ice. His two henchmen followed closely behind, their hands tucked suspiciously inside their coats.
"You need to teach your child some manners, domestic," Dominic snarled, stepping into Sophia’s personal space. "In this house, nobody speaks to me unless I give them permission."
He reached out a hand, intending to grab Sophia’s shoulder to shove her aside.
He never touched her.
ROAR!
Ninety pounds of muscle, teeth, and raw rage exploded forward. Bruno didn't bark. He launched himself directly between Sophia and Dominic, his jaw snapping shut less than two inches from Dominic’s outstretched fingers.
Dominic scrambled backward in sheer terror, slipping on the ice and falling hard onto his back. "Shoot it! Shoot the damn dog!"
Both of Dominic’s men drew their handguns, aiming straight at Bruno’s head.
Sophia screamed, throwing her body over Emma.
"DROP THE WEAPONS!"
A voice like thunder echoed across the courtyard.
Every man froze.
Alessandro Moretti stepped out from the main archway. He wore no coat despite the freezing wind. In his right hand, held loosely at his side, was a black semi-automatic pistol. Behind him, Marco Bellini and four senior estate guards drawn their weapons, leveling them directly at Dominic’s men.
The air in the courtyard turned to liquid ice.
Alessandro walked forward, his boots steady, his face an absolute mask of deathly calm. He stepped past Bruno, who was still standing over Sophia and Emma, his teeth bared, white foam dripping from his dark lips.

Alessandro stopped three feet from his brother, who was still sitting on the frozen stone.
"You draw a gun in my courtyard again, Dominic," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, "and you won't leave this property alive."
