Chapter 9 - A Promise on the Rose Lawn

That evening, as the golden sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple, Alessandro took Sophia by the hand and led her out into the blooming rose garden.
The air was sweet with the scent of fresh roses and jasmine.
Bruno sat comfortably on the green lawn near the stone fountain, while Emma chased glowing fireflies across the grass, her laughter echoing like sweet music through the warm evening air.
Alessandro stopped near the center archway, turning to face Sophia.
He looked unusually nervous—a sight that Sophia found deeply endearing.
"Alessandro?" she asked, smiling up at him. "Are you alright?"
Alessandro took a deep breath, reaching into his suit coat pocket. He pulled out a small, navy velvet box.
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart began to race.
Alessandro dropped down onto one knee on the soft, green grass.
The man who had once ruled Chicago's underworld through fear and cold calculation looked up at her with eyes filled with pure, unconditional devotion.
"Sophia," Alessandro spoke, his deep voice rich with emotion. "Four months ago, I was a man living in a cold, empty house, surrounded by enemies, waiting for an inevitable bullet. Then you and Emma walked through my gates. You brought warmth into my life. You showed me what it means to love, to protect, and to be truly alive."
He opened the velvet box, revealing a breathtaking, flawless three-carat diamond ring that caught the last golden rays of the setting sun.
"I don't want to just protect you, Sophia," Alessandro said deeply. "I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you make this house our home forever?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down Sophia’s cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes!" she sobbed happily, dropping down onto her knees beside him on the grass, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Alessandro! A thousand times yes!"
Alessandro pulled her tight into his arms, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, sweet, breathtaking kiss that sealed their futures together.
Emma ran over, dragging Bruno by his collar. "Mommy! Why are you crying? Did Daddy hurt you?!"
Sophia pulled back, laughing through her tears, shaking her head. "No, sweetie! Mommy is crying because she’s so happy! Mr. Moretti is going to be your daddy forever now!"
Emma’s eyes lit up like bright stars. "Daddy?!"
Alessandro looked down at the little girl who had changed his life with a warm washcloth and a plastic cup. He opened his arm, scooping Emma up into his lap, hugging both mother and daughter close to his heart.
"Yes, Emma," Alessandro whispered, tears glinting in his own eyes. "I’m your daddy now."

Emma wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, kissing his cheek. "Good. Now you can read me two bedtime stories every night!"
Alessandro laughed—a booming, happy sound that echoed across the garden—while Bruno pressed his large head into the center of their group hug, letting out a loud, happy bark.
