Chapter 8 - The New Era

Two months later, spring arrived in Chicago.

The snow melted away, revealing green grass, blooming tulips, and sweet, fresh spring breezes across the Moretti estate.

The mafia syndicate had undergone a massive, historic transformation.

Alessandro had used the aftermath of Dominic’s failed coup to systematically purge the organization of corrupt, ruthless enforcers. He restructured the family business, pivoting away from high-risk, violent operations and focusing entirely on legal shipping infrastructure, real estate development, and international maritime logistics.

The men who remained under his command were loyal, disciplined, and bound by strict rules of conduct.

One sunny afternoon, a massive corporate meeting was held in the grand dining hall of the estate.

Forty high-ranking regional directors, dock managers, and business partners sat around the long mahogany table, discussing quarterly shipping contracts.

At the head of the table sat Alessandro Moretti, wearing a sharp navy suit, looking healthy, powerful, and completely in control.

On his right sat Sophia, dressed in an elegant cream-colored silk dress. She had officially been appointed head of the Moretti Family Charitable Foundation—a fifty-million-dollar fund dedicated to supporting widows, orphaned children, and healthcare facilities across Illinois.

The men at the table no longer looked at Sophia as a former maid. They treated her with the deep, immense respect reserved for the first lady of the empire.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the dining room swung open.

The tough business managers paused mid-sentence, looking over in surprise.

Trotting into the formal room was Bruno. The old Cane Corso wore a brightly colored party hat tied loosely under his chin with a red ribbon.

Following closely behind him was four-year-old Emma, wearing a matching party dress, carrying a tray of pink cupcakes.

"It’s Bruno's birthday!" Emma announced loudly to the room full of hardened businessmen. "Everyone has to stop talking about numbers and eat a cupcake!"

The regional directors looked at each other, bewildered. Three years ago, if anyone had interrupted an executive Moretti meeting, they would have been thrown out of the building.

Alessandro looked at his men, his eyebrows raised slightly. "You heard her. Take a cupcake."

Marco Bellini was the first to stand up, taking a pink cupcake from Emma’s tray with a broad grin. "Happy birthday, Bruno," Marco said, tossing a piece of crustless bread to the dog, who caught it neatly in mid-air.

Within minutes, the serious corporate meeting devolved into a joyful birthday celebration, filled with laughter, shared stories, and the soft music of a piano playing in the background.

Sophia stood beside Alessandro near the large glass windows overlooking the gardens, watching Emma feed a tiny piece of cupcake frosting to Bruno.

Alessandro wrapped his arm around Sophia’s waist, pulling her close against his side.

"You've completely ruined my reputation, you know," Alessandro murmured with a soft laugh, kissing the top of her head. "My directors think I’ve gone soft."

"You haven't gone soft, Alessandro," Sophia smiled, resting her head against his shoulder. "You just found something worth being soft for."
