Chapter 4 - The Golden Thread

By the end of January, the Moretti estate had entered an unusual period of tranquil routine—a calm before a storm that no one wanted to admit was coming.

Every morning at 8:00 a.m., Alessandro took his morning coffee in the glass conservatory instead of his formal dining room.

The reason was simple: the conservatory overlooked the snowy rose garden, where Emma spent her mornings playing "vet clinic" with Bruno. The three-year-old had convinced the ninety-pound war dog to wear a small blue plastic doctor's stethoscope around his neck, while she carefully checked his paws for imaginary splinters.

Sophia worked nearby, folding linens or managing the house cleaning schedules, but her eyes frequently drifted toward the conservatory window—where she would catch Alessandro watching them with a quiet, peaceful expression she had never seen on a man of his stature.

One afternoon, a heavy blizzard hit Chicago, trapping everyone inside the mansion.

Emma, bored from being confined indoors, wandered into Alessandro’s private library holding a large coloring book and a box of worn crayons.

Sophia ran into the room two minutes later, panicked. "Emma! Come out of there, Mr. Moretti is working on important business!"

Alessandro was sitting at his massive oak desk, surrounded by financial ledgers and regional maps, talking on a secure satellite phone.

He held up a hand to quiet Sophia. "I'll call you back, Frank," he said into the phone before hanging up.

He looked over at Emma, who had already made herself comfortable on the plush Persian rug near his desk, laying out her crayons in a precise line. Bruno was stretched out beside her, his head resting near her coloring book.

"What are you drawing?" Alessandro asked, standing up from his chair and walking around the desk.

"A picture of Bruno," Emma announced proudly, holding up a page covered in wild brown and black scribble marks. "And a picture of Mommy. And a picture of you."

Alessandro took the page gently between his fingers. He looked at the crude, colorful drawing of a large black blob (Bruno), a medium dress-wearing stick figure (Sophia), and a tall black stick figure holding a yellow square (Alessandro holding his coffee cup).

A soft, genuine smile broke across Alessandro’s handsome face—a smile so rare that if his mafia rivals had seen it, they wouldn't have recognized him.

"It's very accurate," Alessandro murmured, looking at the drawing. "Especially the coffee cup."

"You can keep it," Emma offered generously. "For your wall."

Alessandro looked at the drawing, then looked at Sophia, who was standing near the door, blushing softly, a warm smile touching her lips.

Alessandro walked over to his massive mahogany bookshelf, pulled down an antique silver picture frame containing an old family photo, removed the old photo, and placed Emma’s crayon drawing inside the frame instead. He set it squarely in the center of his desk.

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. "Mr. Moretti... you don't have to do that."

"It’s my desk, Sophia," Alessandro said gently, stepping close to her. His tall frame towered over her, but there was no threat in his presence—only a deep, magnetic warmth. "I put what I value on it."

Their eyes met, holding for a long, electric moment. The unspoken feelings that had been building between them over the past month—the shared glances, the quiet moments in the hallways, the mutual respect—swirled between them like a physical flame.

Before either of us could say another word, the heavy double doors of the library were pushed open.

Marco Bellini stood in the doorway, his face pale, his coat wet with melted snow.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice laced with urgent, severe tension. "We have a problem. The commission meeting has been moved up to tonight. And Dominic just left the estate with six of his men... heading toward the downtown docks."

Alessandro’s posture instantly went rigid. The warmth in his eyes evaporated, replaced by cold steel.

"Did he take the secondary communications rig?" Alessandro demanded sharply.

"Yes," Marco confirmed grimly. "And boss... he disabled the southern security perimeter cameras before he left."

Alessandro swore under his breath. He turned to Sophia, his hands reaching out to gently grasp her upper arms.

"Listen to me," Alessandro instructed urgently. "Take Emma and go to the safe room behind the wine cellar. Marco will lock you inside from the outside. Do not open that door for anyone except me or Marco. Do you understand?"

Sophia’s heart plummeted into pure terror. "Alessandro... what's happening?"

"Dominic is making his move," Alessandro said grimly. "He’s trying to trigger a war with the rival families while I'm at the estate, so he can claim the commission leadership."

He looked down at Emma, kneeling to touch her soft cheek. "Stay with Mommy, little one. Keep Bruno close."

"Will you come back for story time?" Emma asked innocently.

May you like

Alessandro looked into the little girl's clear brown eyes, feeling a fierce, protective instinct he had never felt for another human being in his life.

"I will always come back for you, Emma," Alessandro promised deeply. "I swear it."
