Chapter 5 - The Betrayal at the Gates

The blizzard howled outside the mansion walls, creating a blinding curtain of white snow that obliterated visibility past ten yards.

Down in the subterranean wine cellar, fifty feet below the main house, Sophia sat on a leather sofa inside the hidden safe room. The room was heavy, reinforced with three-inch-thick steel doors, fully stocked with emergency supplies, medical kits, and independent air filtration systems.

Emma lay beside her, fast asleep, exhausted from the tension of the evening. Bruno lay across the threshold of the safe room, his ears twitching at every distant rumble of thunder—or gunfire—echoing through the stone foundations above.

Sophia couldn't sit still. She paced the floor, her hands tightly clutched together, praying with every fiber of her being for Alessandro’s safety.

Above ground, the estate was under siege.

Dominic had not gone to the docks. That had been a brilliant, calculated lie designed to draw Marco and half of Alessandro’s senior security team away from the property.

At 11:30 p.m., three black armored vans smashed through the southern security gates of the estate.

Forty heavily armed mercenaries—hired by Dominic using stolen syndicate funds—swarmed the estate grounds, overwhelming the skeleton crew of guards Alessandro had left behind.

Inside the main mansion foyer, gunfire shattered the grand crystal chandeliers. Glass, wood splinters, and spent bullet casings rained down onto the marble floor.

Alessandro stood behind the heavy oak staircase, firing his custom semi-automatic pistol with terrifying, methodical precision. Two mercenaries dropped near the front door, but more were pouring in through the shattered French doors of the dining room.

"Boss!" Marco shouted over the deafening roar of automatic rifle fire, ducking behind a marble pillar, blood streaming from a graze on his forehead. "There are too many of them! Dominic bought off the gate guards! We need to pull back to the basement!"

"Get the men to the east wing!" Alessandro ordered, reloading his weapon with lightning speed. "Do not let them reach the wine cellar stairs!"

Suddenly, the heavy iron door at the rear of the foyer burst open.

Dominic walked into the mansion, wearing his leather coat, a wicked, triumphant grin plastered across his face. In his hands, he held a heavy assault rifle. Behind him stood eight elite mercenaries wearing tactical body armor.

"Give it up, Alessandro!" Dominic shouted, his voice echoing over the ringing gunshots. "It’s over! The commission has already received fake recordings proving you sold syndicate secrets to the federal government! By midnight, I will be the head of the Moretti family!"

Alessandro stepped out from behind the pillar, holding his weapon steady, his eyes cold and deadly. "You sold your own family to mercenaries, Dominic. You're a coward."

"I’m a survivor!" Dominic roared, raising his rifle. "Search the house! Find the maid and the brat! Dominic wants them brought out here! I want Alessandro to watch them bleed before I put a bullet in his head!"

Four mercenaries immediately broke away from the main group, rushing toward the basement service stairs that led to the wine cellar.

"NO!" Alessandro screamed, throwing caution to the wind, leaping out from cover to intercept them.

A bullet caught Alessandro in the upper left shoulder, spinning him back against the wall. Blood bloomed instantly across his white dress shirt.

"Boss!" Marco yelled, firing frantically to cover Alessandro as he collapsed behind the oak bar.

Down in the safe room, the heavy steel door suddenly vibrated with a massive, metallic thud.

BOOM!

Sophia jumped to her feet, horror freezing the blood in her veins.

Emma woke up with a sharp cry, clutching her teddy bear.

Bruno stood up instantly. The gray fur along his spine stood on end. His lips pulled back over his massive yellow teeth, revealing dark gums, and a sound erupted from his throat that wasn't a growl—it was the ancient, terrifying roar of a beast preparing to kill or die.

BOOM!

A thermal breaching charge exploded against the heavy electronic lock of the safe room door. Smoke and sparks filled the doorway as the steel door swung open, hanging off its hinges.

Through the thick gray smoke stepped two heavy-set mercenaries holding submachine guns.

"Found them!" one mercenary yelled back toward the hallway. "The kid and the woman are in here!"

The mercenary stepped forward, reaching out a gloved hand to grab Sophia by her hair.

He never finished the movement.

Bruno launched himself through the smoke. Ninety pounds of black fury slammed directly into the mercenary's chest, throwing him backward onto the stone floor of the wine cellar. Bruno’s jaws locked around the man’s throat, severing his windpipe in a single, brutal snap.

The second mercenary panicked, raising his submachine gun. "HOLY SHIT!"

Sophia didn't think. She grabbed a heavy glass wine bottle from the rack beside her and smashed it with all her strength across the back of the second mercenary's head.

The man stumbled forward, dazed. Bruno immediately released the first dead guard and lunged, pinning the second man to the floor, tearing into his arm.

"Run, Emma! RUN!" Sophia screamed, grabbing her daughter into her arms and sprinting past the bleeding bodies into the dark, smoky corridors of the wine cellar.
