Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Empire

By sunrise, the blizzard had passed, leaving behind a pristine, sparkling blanket of fresh white snow over the Chicago countryside.

The siege of the Moretti estate was over.

Marco Bellini and thirty loyal syndicate enforcers arrived from the city, securing the perimeter, rounding up the remaining mercenaries, and clearing the bodies from the estate grounds.

Dominic Moretti was stripped of all family authority, his assets frozen, and he was permanently exiled under armed guard to a remote, high-security compound in Northern Canada—never allowed to step foot in Chicago or contact the syndicate again.

Inside the main mansion, the grand master suite on the second floor had been converted into an emergency recovery room.

Alessandro lay on the large four-poster bed, his shoulder bandaged tightly by Dr. Richard Hale, who had been rushed to the estate at 3:00 a.m.

Sophia sat on a chair beside the bed, holding a warm bowl of soup, carefully feeding Alessandro small spoonfuls while he rested against the propped-up pillows.

"I can feed myself, Sophia," Alessandro murmured with a faint smile, though he didn't refuse the spoon she held to his lips.

"You lost a lot of blood, Mr. Moretti," Sophia said firmly, her maternal nurse instincts taking over. "Sit still and eat your soup."

At the foot of the bed, Bruno lay stretched out on a massive velvet cushion, his flank bandaged where the bullet had grazed him. He was currently enjoying a large bowl of fresh roasted chicken provided directly by Rosa from the kitchen.

Emma sat on the floor beside the dog, wearing a doctor’s white coat that Rosa had shortened for her, carefully applying colorful cartoon Band-Aids to Bruno’s bandages.

"There," Emma announced, patting Bruno’s hip gently. "Now you have dinosaurs on your band-aid. Dinosaurs make ouchies go away faster."

Bruno let out a soft, contented grunt, licking Emma’s knee.

Dr. Hale packed his medical bag, looking at the scene with a wide, amazed grin. "In twenty years of treating animals for this family, I never thought I’d see the day Bruno allowed someone to put dinosaur stickers on his leg."

"He likes dinosaurs," Emma explained logically.

After the doctor left, the room fell into a quiet, peaceful warmth.

Alessandro looked down at Sophia, who was setting the empty soup bowl on the nightstand. He reached out his uninjured hand, his long fingers gently grasping her soft hand, holding it tight.

"Sophia," Alessandro said quietly, his hazel eyes searching hers with profound intensity.

"Yes, sir?" she answered softly.

"Stop calling me 'sir' or 'Mr. Moretti,'" he requested gently. "My name is Alessandro."

Sophia flushed slightly, a beautiful, warm smile breaking across her face. "Alessandro."

He pulled her hand closer, raising it to his lips and pressing a soft, reverent kiss against her knuckles.

"When I was standing in that dark wine cellar last night," Alessandro confessed, his voice low and thick with emotion, "I wasn't thinking about my empire. I wasn't thinking about the commission or my money. The only thing I cared about was getting back to this room... getting back to you and Emma."

May you like

Sophia felt tears prick her eyes, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep, so powerful, it overwhelmed every fear she had ever held.

"We were waiting for you, Alessandro," Sophia whispered, leaning down and pressing a gentle kiss against his cheek. "We will always wait for you."
