Chapter 12 - The Echo of a Lie

By mid-afternoon, news of the pending financial audit had already leaked to local news outlets. Reporters began gathering like vultures near the perimeter of the diner. Sophie stood behind the polished wooden counter, her heart hammering against her ribs as she watched news crews set up cameras across the street.

"Sophie, what's going on out there?" asked Maria, the senior waitress who had worked at the diner since Sophie’s parents ran it. "They're saying the renovation money came from illicit funds!"

"It’s not true, Maria," Sophie said firmly, though her hands trembled slightly as she wiped down the counter. "Ethan built everything legally. Someone is trying to frame him."

Suddenly, the front chime rang as the glass door opened. A tall woman in a sharp grey suit stepped inside, accompanied by two men wearing federal auditor badges. The woman carried a leather briefcase and an air of detached arrogance.

"Sophie Miller?" the woman asked, checking a tablet. "I am Agent Vance—no relation to your husband—from the Corporate Fraud Investigation Bureau. We have a warrant to seize all financial ledgers, digital records, and transaction receipts associated with this property."

"On what grounds?" Sophie stood tall, putting her hands on the counter to steady herself. "This diner was legally transferred to me. My husband paid off the original mortgage through transparent bank transfers."

"We have reason to believe those transfers were routed through an escrow account previously tied to Julian Sterling's insolvent estate," Agent Vance stated flatly. "Until the source of funds is verified, this establishment is under temporary seal."

Before the agents could step behind the counter, the diner door swung open again. Ethan stepped inside, followed by four high-profile corporate attorneys clad in tailored black suits. The atmosphere in the diner instantly shifted; Ethan's presence radiated an overwhelming authority that made even the federal agents pause.

"Agent Vance," Ethan said, his voice smooth yet ice-cold. "You are acting on an unverified subpoena issued by a county magistrate whose major campaign donor happens to be a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands."

He motioned to Marcus, who stepped forward and handed the agent a stay order signed by a Supreme Court judge.

"This is a federal stay order halting any freeze on my family’s private assets pending a formal judicial review," Ethan continued, stepping between the agents and Sophie. "If you take one ledger or touch one machine in this diner today, I will hold your agency personally liable for tortious interference resulting in damages exceeding fifty million dollars."

Agent Vance looked at the document, her composed facade cracking slightly. She glared at Ethan, recognizing she had been outmaneuvered for the moment. "This isn't over, Mr. Vance. Someone opened a door into your past, and the government isn't going to ignore what walks through it."

"Then make sure you knock next time," Ethan replied coldly.

As the agents reluctantly packed their gear and exited, Sophie let out a long breath she didn't realize she was holding. Ethan turned to her immediately, taking her hands in his.

"Are you okay?" he asked gently, all his hardness melting away into genuine concern.

"I am now," Sophie said, looking into his eyes. "Ethan... who is Julian Sterling? When those agents mentioned his name, I saw the look in your eyes."

Ethan looked down at their intertwined fingers, at the diamond ring resting on her finger. "He’s the man who ruined my childhood, Sophie. And now, he’s trying to use you and the girls to break me."
