Chapter 17 - The Final Corner

In his penthouse suite, Julian Sterling watched the broadcast in complete silence. The screen displayed news anchors announcing his arrest warrant, while stock prices for his shell companies plummeted into oblivion.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of his penthouse were pushed open.

Julian didn't look up. He slowly poured himself a glass of whiskey. "I suppose you came to gloat, Ethan."

Ethan walked into the suite alone, his hands in his pockets. Behind him in the hallway stood federal officers and Marcus, waiting quietly.

"I didn't come to gloat, Julian," Ethan said calmly, stopping a few paces away. "I came to look you in the eye one last time."

Julian turned around, his eyes filled with decades of built-up bitterness. "You think you're better than me? You wear the Vance name like a king, but you carry my blood! You took everything that should have been mine!"

"You destroyed yourself, Julian," Ethan replied softly. "You chose greed over family twelve years ago. You thought money was the ultimate power, so you treated people like disposable pawns. That’s why you lost back then, and that’s why you lost today."

"I almost had you!" Julian shouted, slamming his glass onto the table, shattering it. "If that diner had burned to the ground—"

"If you had burned the diner, I would have built another one," Ethan interrupted, his voice unwavering. "If you had taken Vance Global, I would have started over from scratch. Because unlike you, Julian, my wealth isn't stored in bank accounts. My wealth is in the people who love me."

Julian stared at Ethan, opening his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The bitter old man looked suddenly small, fragile, and utterly defeated.

Ethan turned his back on Julian and walked toward the door. "Officers, he’s all yours."

As the federal agents stepped in to place Julian in handcuffs, Ethan walked out into the bright morning light, feeling a profound weight lift from his chest forever. The past was finally buried, and the future was entirely his to write.
