Chapter 4 - WHISPERS AND JEALOUSY

The bluebird song was a complete success.

Emma and Chloe sang louder than anyone else in the fourth-grade choir, their voices ringing clear and bright toward the ceiling, their eyes fixed on Ethan Vance, who sat stoically in the front row, clapping with reserved dignity every time the song concluded.

When the performance ended, the parents flooded the reception area for juice boxes and cookies.

Vanessa Whitmore was practically vibrating with bitter envy. She stood near the refreshment table, holding a plastic cup of punch, watching Ethan Vance crouch down to the girls' eye level while Chloe animatedly explained how the paper bluebirds had been glued together.

"It's disgusting," Vanessa hissed to a group of suburban mothers gathered around her. "A gold-digging waitress seduced a billionaire? Please! She probably stalked him at his office!"

"Or maybe she's his secret mistress," another mother whispered, sipping her coffee. "Look at her dress. It’s from a department store bargain bin! How else could a girl like that get Ethan Vance to show up at a Catholic school recital?"

"I'm going to find out," Vanessa muttered, her eyes narrowing maliciously. "My cousin works for the county records office. If there's dirt on Sophie Bennett, I'll have it by tonight."

Across the room, Ethan reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.

"What's that?" Chloe asked, her blue eyes wide as saucers.

"Payment for a job well done," Ethan said smoothly. He opened the box to reveal two delicate silver charm bracelets, each adorned with a tiny silver bluebird holding a clear crystal in its beak.

Emma gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "They're real silver!"

"Mr. Vance, no," Sophie said quickly, stepping forward, her cheeks flushing red as she saw the luxury brand logo inside the box. "This is too much. You've already done more than enough by just showing up."

Ethan stood up, looking down at Sophie. His gray eyes were unreadable, but his tone softened just a fraction.

"They hired me, Ms. Bennett," Ethan said quietly. "A good contractor always rewards his partners."

"Please, call me Sophie," she said, her voice dropping, feeling the intense gaze of fifty jealous parents boring into her back. "And... thank you. You have no idea what this meant to them."

"I have some idea," Ethan murmured, his mind flicking back to the cold hallways of his childhood boarding school.

Before Sophie could ask what he meant, Vanessa Whitmore marched over, a sweet, toxic smile plastered across her face.

"Mr. Vance!" Vanessa chimed, pushing past Sophie as if she were invisible. "We are so honored to have you at St. Francis! The PTA is hosting an exclusive charity gala next Saturday at the country club. We would be thrilled if you would join our host committee."

Ethan turned his head slowly, looking at Vanessa as if she were a mild annoyance under a microscope.

"Who are you?" Ethan asked coldly.

Vanessa’s smile stiffened. "I'm Vanessa Whitmore. Chair of the Parent Committee."

"Mrs. Whitmore," Ethan said, his voice loud enough to carry across the quieted room. "I believe you told these children that Family Day works better with 'real family'."

Vanessa gasped, clutching her throat. "I... I was merely explaining the tradition—"

"Next time you speak to my... to these children," Ethan interrupted, stepping closer so that his imposing frame shadowed her completely, "remember that my legal team monitors harassment in school environments very closely. Good day."

He turned his back on the speechless woman, took Sophie’s elbow gently, and guided her and the twins toward the exit, leaving the entire PTA standing in stunned, gaping silence.
