Chapter 8 - THE CONFRONTATION

Friday night was the annual St. Francis Parent Gala at the Grandview Country Club.

Vanessa Whitmore stood in the center of the glittering ballroom, surrounded by crystal chandeliers, champagne fountains, and wealthy city patrons. She wore an emerald silk gown, sipping champagne, gloating about her recent land acquisition on 5th Street.

"The diner will be demolished by the end of the month," Vanessa boasted to a group of board members. "And those little troublemakers won't be representing our school at the state competition either."

Suddenly, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung open.

A wave of hushed gasps swept through the high-society crowd.

Ethan Vance walked into the ballroom. On his arm was Sophie Bennett.

Sophie looked breathtaking. She wore an elegant floor-length dark sapphire gown that highlighted her pale hair and delicate features—a dress Ethan had personally ordered from a top designer in New York that morning. Beside them walked Emma and Chloe, dressed in matching velvet dresses, holding their heads high.

Vanessa’s champagne glass nearly slipped from her fingers. "What are they doing here? Security!"

"Security works for me tonight, Mrs. Whitmore," Ethan announced, his deep voice carrying easily across the silent ballroom.

Richard Whitmore stepped forward, his face red with wine. "Vance! You can't crash a private club event! I bought that land legally!"

"You bought a fraudulent contract signed by an unauthorized junior partner," Ethan replied smoothly, signaling to Arthur Pendelton, his chief legal counsel, who stepped forward with a thick legal dossier.

"Ten minutes ago," Arthur announced to the crowd, "the State District Attorney filed an injunction freezing all commercial operations of Whitmore Development Group due to tax evasion, bribing municipal zoning boards, and illegal land seizures."

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

Richard Whitmore turned pale as paper, looking at his wife in sheer panic. "Vanessa... what did you do?"

Ethan stepped closer to the trembling couple.

"And as for the Gold Coin Diner," Ethan added, his voice ringing loud and clear for every wealthy patron to hear, "I bought the entire property this afternoon. I have gifted the deed exclusively to Sophie Bennett. She is now the sole owner of the block."

Sophie looked up at Ethan, her hands flying to her mouth, tears of overwhelming joy spilling over her eyes.

"You ruined us!" Vanessa screamed, her composure shattering completely as she lunged toward Sophie. "You worthless little waitress—"

Before she could reach Sophie, two police officers stepped into the ballroom, holding a warrant.

"Vanessa Whitmore?" the officer said. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage and wire fraud related to the leak of confidential county records."

As the police led a screaming, hysterical Vanessa out of the glittering ballroom in handcuffs, the entire room erupted into thunderous, wild applause.
