Chapter 7 - A STORM AT ST. FRANCIS

The retaliation from Vanessa Whitmore didn't stop at the diner.
On Thursday morning, Sophie received an official letter from the St. Francis School Board, signed by Vanessa as Chair of the Parent Committee.
Dear Ms. Bennett,
Due to recent concerns regarding eligibility and school code-of-conduct compliance, Emma and Chloe Bennett have been removed from the Regional Tri-State Children's Choir Competition.
"They can't do this!" Sophie shouted, holding the paper in her kitchen, her body shaking with anger. "The girls worked for three months on those solos!"
"Mommy?" Chloe asked from the kitchen doorway, holding her silver bluebird bracelet. "Are we not going to the big stage on Saturday?"
Sophie knelt down, grabbing Chloe’s small shoulders, trying to hide her tears. "I'm going to fix this, baby. I promise."
Ten minutes later, Ethan’s Maybach pulled up to the front of the school. He stepped out, looking sharp and lethal in a black wool coat, his jaw set like granite.
He walked into the Principal's office alongside Sophie.
Principal Vance (no relation) sat behind his desk, looking extremely nervous as Ethan slammed the dismissal letter onto the mahogany wood.
"Explain this," Ethan demanded calmly.
"Mr. Vance..." the principal stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Mrs. Whitmore brought forth documentation showing that... well, that Ms. Bennett's financial status makes it difficult for the school to guarantee the travel fees for the state choir competition."
"Travel fees?" Sophie gasped. "The fee is fifty dollars! I already paid it!"
"Mrs. Whitmore also filed a formal complaint," the principal added softly, avoiding Ethan’s burning gaze, "claiming that your... presence at the school has created a hostile environment for other donors."
Ethan leaned over the desk, resting his palms on the wood, his face inches from the principal's.
"How much does the Whitmore family donate to this school annually?" Ethan asked quietly.
"Fifty thousand dollars," the principal answered.
Ethan pulled a leather checkbook from his inner pocket, signed his name with a gold pen, and ripped out a page, sliding it across the desk.
The principal looked down at the check. His breath caught in his throat.
Five million dollars.
"That is an endowment for a new music wing, a sterile cafeteria, and a permanent scholarship fund for children of single mothers," Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet. "On one condition."
"Wh... what condition?"
"You remove Vanessa Whitmore from the board today," Ethan stated. "And you personally reinstate Emma and Chloe Bennett into the state competition with an official written apology from this school."

The principal didn't hesitate for a single second. He grabbed a pen and stamped REINSTATED across the dismissal form in bright red ink.
"Consider it done, Mr. Vance."
