Chapter 13 - Whispers at St. Francis

The impact of the corporate scandal quickly seeped into the quiet hallways of St. Francis Elementary. Children, influenced by the hushed conversations of their parents at home, began to look at Emma and Chloe differently.
During afternoon recess, the twin girls were sitting together under a large oak tree on the playground, carefully arranging their silver bluebird charm bracelets.
"Look, Chloe!" Emma said, pointing to a small glittery charm. "If we put this one next to the bird, it looks like a star!"
Before Chloe could answer, a shadow fell over them. It was Victoria, a classmate whose father was a minor shareholder in a rival real estate firm. Victoria stood with her arms crossed, flanked by two other children.
"My dad says your stepdad is going to jail," Victoria said loudly, making sure the nearby kids heard. "He says all that money for the new school gym was stolen."
Chloe immediately stood up, her tiny hands clenched into fists, her eyes flashing with defiance. "Our dad is NOT a thief! He's the best dad in the world!"
"Then why were there news vans outside your house this morning?" Victoria taunted. "My mom said your family bought your way into our school with fake money. You don't belong here."
Emma felt tears prickling her eyes, but she held her sister's hand tightly. "Our dad works hard! He loves us, and he built the gym so everyone could play!"
"He bought you," Victoria spat back cruelly. "Just like you said at the Family Day show—you tried to buy a dad for five dollars!"
The words hit Emma like a physical blow. She lowered her head, a tear finally falling onto her silver bracelet. But before Victoria could say another word, a stern voice cut through the playground.
"Victoria! That is enough!"
Mrs. Gable, their homeroom teacher, marched over with a look of thunder on her face. "Go inside to the principal's office immediately. All three of you."
Mrs. Gable then knelt down beside Emma and Chloe, wiping Emma’s tear with a soft tissue. "Don't you ever listen to those rumors, sweethearts. I know your father, and I know how much he cares about this school and about you."
Despite the teacher's comfort, the seed of doubt and fear had been planted. That evening at dinner, the usual cheerful chatter was absent. Emma played silently with her peas, while Chloe kept looking up at Ethan with a worried, contemplative expression.
Ethan noticed the heavy silence right away. He exchanged a concerned glance with Sophie, who nodded gently, encouraging him to speak.
"Alright, team," Ethan said, setting his fork down with a gentle smile. "What happened at school today? And don't tell me 'nothing'—I know my girls too well."
Emma looked up, her voice small. "Daddy... are people going to take you away from us?"
Ethan’s heart ached at the question. He immediately got up from his chair, knelt down between the twins' seats, and took both of their small hands in his massive palms.
"Listen to me very carefully, Emma, Chloe," Ethan said, his voice steady, warm, and absolute. "No one is taking me anywhere. Some bad people are telling lies because they want to take what we've built. But I promise you, on my life, I am not going anywhere. I am your dad, and I will always, always show up."
Chloe looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation, but found only pure strength. She threw her arms around his neck, followed closely by Emma.

"We believe you, Daddy," Chloe whispered.
From across the table, Sophie watched them, her heart full, yet her mind resolved. She knew that to protect her family, she couldn't just sit back and let Ethan fight this war alone.
