Chapter 12 - The Emergency Protocol

By nightfall, the coastal cottage was locked down. Liam had spent the evening reinforcing the window latches and checking the security cameras he had installed around the perimeter years ago—a precaution Sarah had once thought was a sign of lingering trauma, but now proved to be a vital shield.
Inside the living room, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Jamie was in his bedroom, reading a story to Grace, keeping his sister occupied as he had been instructed to do. Sarah sat on the sofa, her hands wrapped tightly around a mug of hot tea that had gone entirely cold.
"We have to run, Liam," she whispered, her eyes wide with a fear he hadn't seen since the dark days of his trial. "If Reyes is out, and he knows where we are... we can't stay here. We can't let him near the children."
Liam walked over and knelt in front of her, taking her cold hands in his. "We aren't running, Sarah. When I was in that prison, I promised myself that if I ever got back to you, I would never let anyone make me run again. Running makes us targets. It keeps us in the dark. Here, we have the home advantage. We know the terrain, we have the security system, and Agent Vance’s team is setting up a surveillance perimeter down the road."
"But what if they're not enough?" Sarah’s voice cracked. "You saw what Reyes did to you before. He took five years of your life with a few forged documents and a corrupt judge. He has resources we can't even comprehend."
"But he doesn't have the element of surprise anymore," Liam said, his voice ringing with a hard, unbreakable determination. "And I’m not the same man he framed three years ago. Back then, I was a trusting logistics officer who believed in the system. Now, I know exactly how the system can be broken—and how to break the people who try to use it against me."
Liam stood up and walked to his desk, opening a hidden compartment beneath the bottom drawer. He pulled out a encrypted hard drive—the "insurance policy" he had compiled during the investigation of Reyes. It contained copies of every offshore account, every shipping manifest, and every corrupt political contact Reyes had ever used. He had kept it hidden, knowing that in the world of international smuggling, a man is only as safe as the secrets he keeps.
"Agent Vance thinks Reyes is coming for revenge," Liam said, plugging the drive into his secure laptop. "But Reyes is a businessman first. He doesn't risk a federal prison break just for a personal vendetta. He needs something on this drive. He needs the encryption keys to his frozen offshore accounts—the ones my testimony locked up three years ago. There is forty million dollars sitting in a Swiss bank that only I can unlock."
"So you're the key," Sarah realized, her breath catching.
"Yes," Liam said, his eyes reflecting the blue glow of the monitor. "And as long as I have the key, I have the leverage. I’m going to use it to draw him out on my terms."
The security monitor on his desk suddenly flickered. Camera four, which covered the gravel road leading to the main highway, went black. A second later, camera three, overlooking the northern dunes, showed a brief flash of shadow moving through the tall sea grass.

Liam closed the laptop instantly and reached into the desk drawer, pulling out a licensed, semi-automatic pistol. He checked the magazine with a smooth, practiced motion.
"They're here," Liam whispered. "Sarah, get the kids into the safe room. Now."
