Chapter 19 - The Final Ledger

As the winter snow began to fall over the Blue Ridge Mountains, Liam received one final letter from Agent Marcus Vance.
Liam sat at his desk in the cabin's loft office, the fireplace crackling warmly downstairs. He opened the official DOJ envelope and pulled out a single sheet of paper.
Dear Liam,
I am writing to inform you that Victor Reyes’s final appeal was denied by the federal circuit court this morning. He has been transferred to ADX Florence, where he will serve the remainder of his life sentence with zero possibility of parole. Furthermore, the Swiss government has finalized the asset forfeiture of the forty million dollars. As the primary whistleblower whose testimony made the recovery possible, you have been officially awarded a standard federal recovery bounty of ten percent of the seized funds.
Four million dollars has been deposited into your secure account today. It is a small token of appreciation from a grateful department for the five years you lost.
You’re a free man, Liam. In every sense of the word. Live your life.
Best regards, Marcus Vance
Liam stared at the letter for a long time. The money was a life-changing sum, but to Liam, the true value of the paper was the word free. The system had finally, completely admitted its mistake. The ledger was finally balanced.

He folded the letter and put it in his desk drawer, not with anger or triumph, but with a quiet, peaceful closure. He didn't need the money to feel rich; he already had everything he had ever wanted.
He walked down the wooden stairs to the living room, where a massive Christmas tree was glowing with warm golden lights.
