Chapter 4 - The Safe Haven

The Presidential Suite of the Bayside Heights Carlton was a world away from the damp, concrete kitchen. It was filled with soft carpets, warm lights, and the soothing scent of lavender and fresh linen.

I sat on the edge of the massive king-sized bed, watching Sarah as she bathed Jamie in the porcelain tub of the master bathroom. The sound of splashing water and my son’s soft, hesitant giggles was the most beautiful music I had ever heard. It was a stark contrast to the heavy, violent thoughts that had been hammering against my skull since I walked into that backyard.

Sarah walked out of the bathroom, carrying Jamie wrapped in a plush, oversized towel. She had dressed him in one of the new outfits I had brought from my luggage—a soft, blue cotton pajama set. He looked so small, but his cheeks had a faint hint of color from the warm bath.

"He wants to see the toys, Liam," Sarah whispered, her eyes shining with a soft, watery light.

I jumped up, opening the suitcase and pulling out the massive box of toys I had bought during my layover in London. There were miniature cars, a toy train set, and a soft, plush bear.

Jamie’s eyes went wide. He looked at the toys, then up at me, as if asking for permission.

"They're yours, buddy," I said, kneeling down beside him. "All yours. You don't have to hide them. You can play as loud as you want."

He didn't scream or run. He slowly reached out, his tiny fingers touching the plush bear, pulling it close to his chest. He sat on the soft carpet and began to roll a toy car back and forth, his movements quiet but focused.

Sarah sat on the sofa, her body sinking into the plush cushions as if she had finally allowed herself to collapse. I walked over and sat beside her, wrapping my arm around her shoulders. She pulled her legs up, resting her head against my chest, her breath hot against my neck.

"Tell me everything, Sarah," I murmured, my hand gently stroking her hair. "How did this happen? I sent $1,800 every single month. I sent extra for holidays. I sent money for Jamie’s school."

Sarah let out a long, shaky breath, her fingers clutching my shirt as if she were afraid I would vanish if she let go.

"At first, it was okay, Liam," she began, her voice cracking. "But three months after you left, Gertrude told me that the bank had frozen the accounts. She said there was a tax issue with your foreign income. She told me we had to cut back. She moved us out of the master suite into the guest room, saying she needed to lease the main rooms to 'host' business partners to clear your name."

"That was a lie," I growled, my jaw clenching. "The bank never froze anything. I checked my balances every month from the terminal in Riyadh."

"I didn't know," Sarah wept. "I didn't have a phone. Prudence took my phone, saying she was going to upgrade it, but she never gave it back. Every time I asked to speak to you, they told me the time difference was too great, or that you were on an offshore rig with no reception. They said you were too stressed, and if I complained, you would lose your focus and get hurt."

She looked up at me, her eyes filled with a terrifying, raw vulnerability.

"They told me you knew, Liam. They told me you wanted us to live like that because you were ashamed of my family. They said you told them to keep us out of sight."

"No..." I gasped, the sheer, demonic cruelty of their lie cutting through me like a physical blade. "No, Sarah, never. I worked every single day for you. I lived in a metal tin box with eight other men, eating dust, just so you could have everything."

"I wanted to believe that," she whispered, her hand rising to touch my face. "But when the months turned into years, and I never heard your voice... I started to believe them. I stayed because of Jamie. I had no money, no phone, no family left. My grandmother died two years ago, and Gertrude told me that if I tried to leave, she would use your money to declare me an unfit mother and take Jamie away from me forever."

May you like

"She will never touch him again," I said, my voice thick with a dark, absolute promise. "I am going to strip them of every single thing they took from us. The house, the cars, the bank accounts. They are going to learn what it means to actually starve."

I held her close as she cried, her tears soaking my shirt, while my son rolled his toy car across the floor, finally safe in the light.
