Chapter 16 - The Aftermath of the Storm

The morning sun rose over the Georgia coast, painting the sky in pale shades of pink and gold. The beach was filled with emergency vehicles, their blue and red lights reflecting off the wet sand.
Liam stood on the porch, a blanket wrapped around his shoulders, watching as the officers loaded a handcuffed, furious Victor Reyes into the back of a secure transport van. The wounded mercenary had been taken away in an ambulance, and the explosive charges had been safely defused by the bomb squad.
Agent Marcus Vance walked up the porch steps, carrying a cup of hot coffee, which he handed to Liam.
"I have to admit, Vance," the agent said, looking out at the ocean. "Your wife has some serious steel in her. Going under the house with wire cutters while an escaped felon is holding her husband hostage? That’s some next-level courage."
Liam looked back toward the doorway, where Sarah was sitting on the sofa, holding both Jamie and Grace in her arms. The children were safe, unharmed, and finally beginning to calm down.
"She's the strongest person I know," Liam said softly, a deep wave of gratitude washing over him. "She kept me alive in that prison, and she saved us tonight."
"The reverse-tracer you initiated on your laptop was a massive success," Agent Vance continued, his tone turning professional. "It didn't just trace Reyes’s account; it identified the IP address of his primary financial backer in Washington. We just arrested a senior defense contractor who was funding Reyes’s escape. The entire network is being dismantled as we speak. Reyes is going to a supermax facility in Colorado. He’s never coming out."
Liam let out a long, shuddering breath. The heavy weight that had hung over his chest for eight years—from the moment he was arrested in the desert to this very morning—finally felt like it was lifting.
"Is it over, Marcus?" Liam asked, using the agent's first name for the first time. "Really over?"

"It's over, Liam," Marcus said, extending his hand. "You're safe. Your family is safe. You can finally put the desert to bed."
Liam shook his hand, a genuine, deep sense of peace settling into his bones. As the agent walked down the steps to join his team, Liam turned and walked back into the cottage, letting the screen door slam shut behind him.
