Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The legal system is slow, but it is relentless.

With the evidence compiled by Arthur Pendelton and the forensic accounting team I had hired, the state prosecutors had filed a massive, multi-count indictment against Gertrude and Prudence Hartley.

The charges were staggering: Grand Larceny, Deed Fraud, Identity Theft, and Criminal Neglect of a Minor.

The trial was held in the county courthouse of Bayside Heights. I sat in the front row, my hand locked in Sarah’s, as the prosecutor laid out the systematic, calculated cruelty of my family’s scheme.

The jury was shown the forged bank documents. They were shown the receipts for "tuition" that had actually been spent on Prudence’s trips to Paris and Milan. They were shown the medical records that had been altered to hide Jamie’s severe malnutrition.

And finally, the prosecutor played the audio recordings from the security system I had installed in the mansion before leaving—recordings my mother had forgotten existed.

"Let them stay in the back," Gertrude’s voice sneered through the courtroom speakers. "If Helen sees that skinny bitch and her brat, she’ll start asking questions. Tell her Liam is keeping them on a strict budget because of his taxes."

"I don't care if they're hungry, Mom," Prudence’s voice replied with a cold, lazy chuckle. "They can eat the leftover chicken after the guests leave. It's not like they're doing any real work anyway."

A wave of disgust ran through the courtroom.

Gertrude sat at the defense table, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders shaking with pathetic, desperate tears. Prudence looked hollow, her eyes blank, her expensive clothes replaced by a cheap, gray suit her public defender had provided.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

The verdict was unanimous: Guilty on all counts.

The judge, a stern-faced woman who had clearly been disgusted by the evidence, did not show any leniency.

"Your behavior is not just criminal," the judge said, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "It is a betrayal of the most sacred bond of family. You took a father’s sacrifice, a husband’s labor, and you used it to starve his child while you lived in luxury. I sentence you, Gertrude Hartley, to twelve years in the state penitentiary. And you, Prudence Hartley, to eight years."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to cuff them and lead them away, Gertrude looked back at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, silent plea for mercy.

I didn't move. I didn't blink. I simply watched them go, knowing that the debt they owed to my wife and my son had finally been paid in full.
