Chapter 20 - The Oasis in the Snow
On Christmas Eve, the mountain cabin was transformed into a winter wonderland. A thick blanket of soft white snow covered the pines outside, reflecting the warm glow of the lights from the cabin windows.
Inside, the air was filled with the rich, comforting scents of roasting turkey, cinnamon, and fresh pine needles. A fire was roaring in the stone fireplace, casting a flickering, golden light across the room.
Jamie and Grace were sitting on the plush rug near the tree, happily opening their first presents under the watchful, tail-wagging eye of Salty. Grace was wearing a soft red dress, her bright blue eyes wide with wonder as she shook a small wooden rattle.
Eleanor, Sarah’s mother, was sitting on the armchair near the hearth, a gentle, happy smile on her face as she watched her grandchildren. She had become a regular visitor to the cabin, her relationship with Sarah fully healed in the quiet peace of the mountains.
Liam walked over to the kitchen island, where Sarah was finishing the preparation of the dinner. She wore a simple, elegant dark green knit dress, her hair pinned back in soft waves.
Liam stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, watching his children play.
"We made it, Sarah," Liam whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
Sarah turned in his arms, looping her hands around his neck. She looked up at him, her green eyes filled with a love so deep, so profound, it made the memories of the desert feel like nothing more than a passing shadow in a long, beautiful dream.
