Chapter 17 - The Scars We Carry

A month had passed since the night of the siege. The cottage had been fully repaired; the broken windows replaced with storm-resistant glass, the scarred floorboards sanded and refinished.
But the mental scars of the family were slower to heal.
Jamie had become overly cautious, constantly checking the locks on the doors before he went to sleep. Sarah would wake up in the middle of the night, her heart racing, reaching out to make sure Liam was still lying beside her.
One evening, as the stars began to glitter over the ocean, Liam found Sarah sitting on the porch swing, her legs pulled up to her chest, staring out at the dark water.
"You're thinking about it again," Liam said softly, sitting beside her and wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
"I keep thinking about what would have happened if I had cut the wrong wire, Liam," she whispered, her voice trembling. "What if the bomb had gone off? What if Reyes had shot you before the police arrived? We were so close to losing everything we fought for."
"But we didn't," Liam said, his voice warm and steady. He kissed her temple, his hand gently tracing the side of her arm. "We survived because we fought together. In the desert, I was alone. I had to survive on anger and hope. But here, we have each other. Our love isn't just a soft thing, Sarah. It's a shield."
She looked up at him, her eyes shining with tears. "I want to move, Liam. I love this cottage, but... every time I look at the dunes, I see shadows."
Liam looked at the house. He had built his business here, but he realized then that a home isn't a physical structure. It isn't a specific coordinate on a map.
"Then we'll move," Liam said without a single moment of hesitation. "We'll sell the cottage. We can go anywhere, Sarah. We can buy a farm in the mountains, or a house in the valley. Wherever you and the kids feel safe, that's where our oasis is."

A soft, beautiful smile finally broke through Sarah's tears. She leaned in, pressing her lips to his in a deep, passionate kiss that carried all the love, the pain, and the hope of their shared journey.
"The mountains sound beautiful," she murmured against his lips.
