Chapter 1 - The Gate at Sunset

The heavy oak front door clicked shut, leaving Vanessa and Daniel standing in the grand entryway holding a freshly printed formal Notice to Quit. The ink was still warm from Margaret’s laser printer. Outside, the sound of gravel grinding beneath tires signaled the arrival of the elite security team and private locksmith Margaret had retained two hours earlier.
Vanessa’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage, her gold-plated drop earrings shaking. "Are you insane, Margaret? You can't just evict us! We live here! This is our home!"
"This is my estate," Margaret replied, her voice as smooth as polished marble. She didn't raise her pitch; she didn't need to. "And as of twelve minutes ago, your temporary license to occupy has been formally revoked under Clause 14B of the agreement your husband signed."
Daniel stepped forward, his former arrogance evaporating into desperate panic. "Mom, come on. It’s Easter! There are forty people arriving in less than an hour—investors, Vanessa’s society circle, local press! If you do this, you’ll ruin my reputation!"
"You ruined your own reputation the moment you attempted to upload my property title to an offshore lender," Margaret said, holding up a sleek black flash drive containing the captured network logs of the printer queue. "Did you really think a retired senior partner at Sterling, Vance & Hayes wouldn't audit her own network?"
Before Daniel could respond, the locksmith stepped through the side entrance, accompanied by two former police officers now working for a high-end estate protection firm. Within thirty minutes, every lock on the perimeter doors was changed.
At 4:00 PM precisely, the first luxury sedan pulled up to the gated entrance. Vanessa rushed down the driveway in her designer heels, attempting to save face. But Margaret had already instructed the gatekeepers: No entry.

From her second-floor balcony, Margaret watched as forty of the city's most prominent figures sat idling in their Mercedes and Porsches, watching Vanessa scream hysterically through the intercom iron grates while security turned them away. The catering vans arrived next, only to turn around after Margaret personally canceled the $15,000 corporate card charge.
By nightfall, Vanessa’s grand Easter gala was reduced to two people standing on the sidewalk beside luggage packed into garbage bags, surrounded by the cold silence of the suburban estate.
