Chapter 7 - Facing the Music

While Vanessa began her sentence, Daniel started his long road to redemption. Deprived of luxury and status, he took a job working night shifts at a local logistics warehouse, moving crates for minimum wage while living in a tiny studio apartment.

Every month, fifty percent of his paycheck was automatically deducted and transferred to Margaret’s restitution account.

Six months into his sentence of community service, Margaret drove quietly to the city park where Daniel was painting over graffiti on a humid Saturday morning. She stood beneath the shade of an oak tree, watching him scrub a wall, sweat dripping down his face.

He noticed her, paused, and wiped his brow with the back of his arm. He didn't run to her or offer excuses. He just bowed his head respectfully.

"Mom," he said quietly.

"You missed a spot on the corner," Margaret said softly.

Daniel offered a small, tired, but genuine smile—the first real smile she had seen from him in years. "I'll get right on it."
