Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

By Monday morning, Vanessa and Daniel were forced to check into a cheap, roadside motel on the outskirts of the county. The sleek, golden lifestyle Vanessa had projected on social media was unravelling rapidly.
Margaret sat in the corner office of her long-time colleague and friend, Arthur Pendelton, senior prosecutor turned white-collar defense attorney. On the glass table between them lay three thick yellow folders.
"They were thorough, Margaret, I'll give them that," Arthur said, adjusting his spectacles as he examined the forged documents. "Vanessa wasn't just planning an Easter party. She opened three separate shell companies registered in Delaware under your name. She was using your credit profile to secure lines of credit totaling nearly $1.2 million."
Margaret closed her eyes briefly. The sting of her son’s betrayal was sharp, but her mind remained razor-focused. "And Daniel?"
"Daniel signed off as a guarantor," Arthur revealed. "Either he’s the most oblivious husband on the eastern seaboard, or he was actively assisting her in liquidating your equity before you caught on."
Margaret took a sip of black coffee. "He isn't criminal, Arthur. He's weak. Vanessa targeted his insecurities after his tech startup collapsed. She convinced him that taking what was 'eventually his' was just early inheritance."

"Weakness in the face of greed is still a choice," Arthur reminded her gently. "If we file the criminal fraud charges today, Daniel goes down with her."
"Let the police handle the forgery investigation," Margaret said firmly. "I won't shield him from the consequences of his cowardice. Serve the formal asset freezing order by noon."
