Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vanessa

Three months later, Vanessa’s trial concluded. Deprived of Margaret’s wealth and exposed by her own electronic footprint, her defense fell apart. The court found her guilty of grand larceny, identity fraud, and document forgery.
During the sentencing hearing, Margaret sat in the front row, elegant, silent, and imposing. Vanessa was led out in an orange jumpsuit, sentenced to four years in a federal penitentiary with full restitution orders.
As Vanessa passed Margaret, she glared with burning hatred. "You ruined my life!" she hissed.
Margaret looked at her with pity. "You ruined your own life, Vanessa. You simply mistook my kindness for weakness."

Outside the courthouse, reporters swarmed Margaret, asking if she felt vindicated.
"I feel no joy in this," Margaret told the cameras calmly. "Greed is a tragic disease. I am simply keeping my house in order."
