Chapter 4 - Stripped of Luxury

The fallout was swift and merciless. With the asset freezing order in full effect, Vanessa’s credit cards were declined at every turn. Her high-society friends—who had gossiped endlessly about the ruined Easter party—blocked her number.
Inside their cramped motel room, the illusions that had sustained their marriage vanished.
"Do something, Daniel!" Vanessa shrieked, throwing an empty designer purse across the room. "Call your mother! Beg her! Tell her you’ll divorcing me—tell her whatever she wants to hear so she releases the funds!"
Daniel sat on the edge of the squeaky bed, staring at his hands. For the first time in two years, the fog of vanity had lifted, leaving him with the cold, ugly truth of what he had become.
"She’s not going to release anything, Vanessa," Daniel said quietly. "She's a top-tier attorney. She built her career putting people like us behind bars."
"People like us?" Vanessa snarled, stepping into his face. "I did this for us! To build an image! You were a failed entrepreneur living in your mother's shadow!"
May you like
"No," Daniel said, standing up and looking at her clearly. "You did it for yourself. And I was too much of a coward to stop you."
That evening, local police arrived at the motel door. They weren't there for Daniel. They were holding a warrant for Vanessa’s arrest regarding the forged loan documents and identity theft. As the handcuffs clicked around Vanessa’s wrists, she screamed curses at Daniel, who stood silently on the balcony, watching her get pulled into the back of a cruiser.
