Chapter 3 - The War of Injunctions

Vanessa did not go down without a fight. By Wednesday, she had hired a cut-rate publicity lawyer and filed an emergency injunction claiming illegal eviction, elder abuse, and emotional distress, alleging Margaret was mentally incapacitated and unfit to manage her estate.

The courtroom was packed. Vanessa showed up wearing a modest black dress, crying softly into a tissue, attempting to portray herself as a dutiful daughter-in-law tossed out into the cold by a tyrannical, senile mother-in-law.

"Your Honor," Vanessa’s lawyer argued passionately, "my client was forced into a motel room despite pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into maintaining the respondent’s property!"

When it was Margaret’s turn, she didn't send a representative. She stood up herself, buttoning her navy suit jacket, stepping up to the podium with thirty years of courtroom authority.

"Your Honor," Margaret began, her voice ringing clearly through the chamber. "The defense claims financial contribution. I submit into evidence Exhibit A: the complete forensic accounting audit of my estate's bank records for the past eighteen months."

She systematically handed the documents to the bailiff.

"Every dollar spent on renovations was drawn from an unauthorized equity line fraudulently taken out under my social security number. Furthermore, Exhibit B contains audio recordings from my home security system where Mrs. Vanessa Vance explicitly details her plan to commit me to an assisted living facility once the refinancing closed."

The judge looked over the documents, his expression hardening with every second. He slammed his gavel down so hard the echoes rattled the mahogany walls.

"Motion for injunction denied. Criminal referral granted. Clear the courtroom."
